After riding yesterday, I love my 700. I test drove the 700 and 1000. While the 1000 would have been nice, The 700 works for me. couldn't cash out the extra for a 1000

I bought my 700-2 back in November. I walked in and told the salesman I was leaning toward the 700, but if he wanted to talk me into the 1000, I'd listen. He said no the 700 was what I wanted. He said the 1000 is so loud you can hardly hear yourself think. He also said the only reason to get one over the 700 is passenger capacity. When it came down to it, I really couldn't justify the extra cost.

I don't carry a lot of passengers. I do carry corn, feeders, dead deer, dead hogs, firearms, etc. I live in mostly flat land with a few hills and no rocks larger than a bowling ball. The 700 is way quieter than my old 660 Rhino, more ground clearance, and more power. It also starts better with the fuel injection. So far I love it. I do think that Honda needs to build in more storage.

As far as speed, 44 - 45 MPH is plenty fast in the woods. More acceleration might be nice, but I don't need it.

The 700 is definitely a great machine but the 1000 is quieter. Not sure what he was thinking when he said that.

I loved my 700 but wanted the low range and turf mode.

It sounds like the 700 is the best machine for you.

Thanks for the welcome. No pics, it's pretty mud encrusted right now.

I didn't test drive the 1000. Now I'm wishing I had. Never trust a salesman. I think he was probably wanting to move the last two '16 Pioneers. All of the 1000's were '17. So far the 700 has been great.

I test drove both the '16 700-4 and 1000-5. 1000-5 was louder and rougher ride. Bought the 700-4, and it's been great. EXCEPT, above 11,000 feet climbing steep grades on the Alpine Loop in Colorado, it was underpowered. Problem was air intake. Called our dealer in north Texas. They were very surprised that it was so underpowered. But told me to take the air filter cap off for a day and maybe the computer would reprogram itself for high altitude. It did, and we replaced the air filter cap after that and it did fine. Had a great trip. Now we know that we need a better exhaust tip and air filter.
Other than that one problem, we love our 700-4.

700 is definitely an awesome machine. There are things about it I definitely miss. I got some videos of mine with the 3D exhaust tip on my YouTube in mug signature. Give it a good sound for sure

I looked at both when I was about to buy...The reliability, the "medium" size, the cost, and my type of usage made the decision for me. I did not even know of the heat or clutch issue at that time with the P1K, so that was not a factor. It basically just did everything I wanted. If I was hauling more folks around, or really rode in extreme conditions, then maybe the P1K would be a better choice, but so far my 700 does everything I want it to do with no problems at all...

When you say air filter cap are you meaning the air box lid? I need to try this, I'm going riding at around 10,000 ft. this weekend. How long did it take for the computer to reprogram?

Yes, the air box lid. It was fine after 1 day of riding with it off. And we had 650 pounds in it with just the people, plus a cooler and spare tire, and the heavy metal roof. I think you will be fine at 10,000 feet. We didn't have problems until about 11,000 (or at least quite a ways above timberline), nearer the tops of the 12,000 ft passes.

If you take the air cap off, be careful going through water. They advised to not go through deep creeks with it off.

Have fun!

I have to wonder if it would have reprogramed just as well as without removing the breather cover.

Love my 700 but it is under powered. The power train is tried and true with little to no problems. Part of me wishes that I had held out for the 1000.
Your good, your saving money more ways than one, with the P7!

I don't know about saving money. With the add ons I've put on my 700 (money wise) I would've come out about the same with a 1000 Lol. However, I will say the 1000s were a little higher back when I bought my 700. Now you can nearly get a brand new 1000 for the price the 700s were.

It’s woefully underpowered, especially at higher elevations and it’s totally absurd that it wasn’t given a high low.

Yes they've gone down. I saw an advertised new 2017 700-4 for right at $10k. The resale market for them are laughable. Especially since they've been ending up with too many "last year new models". I've noticed Polaris has the same problem too. They flood the market with too many new machines and then have to drop the price to move them.
