I think I'd like to replace the stock AT/MT/Sport switch with something backlit. It's annoying as hell trying to find this thing in the dark.

Anyone done it here? I'm thinking DP/DT Momentary on both sides, Carling switches.

FTR, my machine is a 2018 1000-5 Deluxe, so the AT/MT/Sport switch is the only rocker it came with. I use it quite often when approaching hills.

I was looking at the dash hole it sits in, and thinking a V-series switch would fit in there, maybe I'd need to use the switch insert to get it right.

Oh, OK. I could probably just order an LE switch and swap it out.

But then of course, it'd probably be 5x more expensive than a Carling.

@Dirtstiffs-1000 any chance you can put a caliper on the switch and its cutout so we can compare dimensions?

Well, this is funny.

The MSRP on my unlit AT/MT switch is $85. So I'm laughing thinking how much it must be for the backlit LE switch.

Backlit LE Mode switch: $33

🤔

Found some pics and confirmed.
Deluxe AT switch is simular to carling.
LE is oversized.

You mean by eyeballing it? I woulda thunk the LE was smaller.

Id get the LE switch as cheep as it is, and just cut the plastic around the deluxe one to fit. Shouldn't be hard. Either with a dremel or an exacto knife. As long as there is room for it.

Might not work.
LE type are deep well switches.
Its not a pop into any cutout hole kind of switch.

But a Carling DT (M) should work.

Right there like the Talon switches. There is some stuff behind that area that might cause a problem. I put my OTR horn switch just above that switch and it was a mo fo to get it in there let alone the wiring.
maybe a relocation of the LE switch might work as well? Lots of options.

As mentioned in this thread, make sure there's nothing to interfere with the back of the switch body - including the extended wiring connections.
To install Carling rocker switches, I prefer the exacto or utility knife.
I trace the switch outline with a pencil, double check level and measurement, and cut with the knife.
I find it easier to control and it makes clean, straight lines.

I’ve done both ways before and the way you described is my favorite way to do it
