I'd run it down past the last step to the end of the hall.

Tie it in to your baseboard.

You can stop it just past the the last stair nose too, couple inches or so, whatever is aesthetic. Plumb cut it vertically, then your baseboards can wrap the corner and die into them. Just an idea. Pay no mind to the dirt, this is the mud room.

Here’s step 1. Skirting in, gap at the bottom for hard wood and tile that are coming. Only wasted 3! Ha, ha!!
