I thought I'd take a few pics while replacing the boot. This is the rear outer CV.

I chose to remove the spindle and knuckle. It was easier than and less messy than pulling the axle through the knuckle.

Here's a pic with out the knuckle.

Give the axle a tug and it should come out. I placed the axle in a vice and used a hammer and chisel to punch the CV joint off the shaft.

After marking the inner and outer races, you can turn the cage so that you can remove the balls. I started with the one I marked and removed them in a clockwise rotation. This way they go back in the same place.

You can now turn the cage vertical so it can be removed.

Once it's removed, you can remove the inner race.

I did not have to replace anything. I only disassembled it to make sure it's clean after the ride back with a torn boot. Here it is after clean up.

Reassembly is pretty straight forward. Just be sure to use grease everywhere prior to reassembly.

Here it is all back together.

The next step is to wait for the UPS man to bring the new boot.

More to come.....

I just got in from a work trip and found the boots have come in. I'll get a chance to install it this weekend.

I slipped the clamp and boot on before putting on the CV joint

The clamp is pulled tight and locked down

I put grease in the joint and then filled the boot with the remaining.

I slipped the CV back on the shaft, you may have to use a punch or screw driver to keep the retaining ring pushed in the groove while tapping on the CV.

Make sure to grease the seal in the diff. I used grease liberally on the splines and sealing surfaces.

I grease the knuckle the same way and reinstalled it. Make sure you use a new cotter pin.

Now time to have fun again riding!

I really need some better guards but all the guards I've seen are meant for stock wheels. I've got offset wheels and wheel spacers so I need an extended guard to cover the gap. I will probably make some one day. I just can't find time to do stuff like that. I still haven't finished the fender flares. One day soon.....

Thanks for the kind comments. I learn a lot from forums so I try to give back.

I still need better CV guards. This happened today. If I could just get the time to, I could make some. Good thing I drive a Honda, I've got time to ride but no time to repair.

Maybe add a flange of aluminum? You could screw it on adjust it to fit your wheels?

That would look like a redneck thing I would do. I'll put that on the to-do list.

Figure out the width and then make a cap you could rivet on could make it higher and wider.

Did you use same grease that came with CV boot repair kit?
