Front differential noise

Just digging this thread up while I was doing some searching on the Pioneer diff whine and the straight-cut gears.

So is the Talon pretty quiet when running around in 2 wheel or turf (does it have turf?)

On a side note, I came across a Can Am discussion, where apparently the 2011 and previous Commanders had whine, and then Can Am went to helical gears in 2012 and it was a big improvement. I believe the guys with older machines were able to upgrade.

No turf mode on the Talon, its a spool type rear end so its locked constantly.

I can't stand conflicts (my OCD kicked in as soon as you posted that) so I jacked mine up and started rotating wheels and counted. For my machine (2019 R), the service manual is correct and the parts list is incorrect. Front is 13/44 and the rear is 13/43.

OCD? No, no, no! It's CDO . . . needs to be in alphabetical order.

Use a flat head screwdriver and a small hammer and tap it around to get it out. An adjustable spanner wrench may work too.

I used Redline heavy shock proof in the diffs and I think that helped with the noise.

Front only, yes it made a difference. What made the biggest difference was airing up the front tires to around 16 psi, rears about 12 psi. With the difference in gear ratios front to back the front tires need to be "taller" to avoid bind/noise.

I just did the math again, the front diff ratio is 1:1.38461 (13/44), the rear is 1:3.30769 (13/43), when you calculate it out to revs of the driveshaft per mile the front drive shaft needs to turn faster than the rear....not possible, right? It's attached to a common shaft through the sub trans. In 1 mile the rear needs to turn 2383.7xxx times & the front 2439.1xxx times to travel a mile if the tires are exactly 28" front & rear. Given that the front tires need to be just a bit taller than the rear to equal out, in this case with the rears at 28" exactly the fronts need to be 28.6511371985" diameter to not put the driveline in a bind. We all know that tires can vary in size from what is put on the sidewall to actual. It may take some testing but start with 4-5 psi more in the front than the rears, the difference was immediately noticeable.

I run Redline Heavy Shockproof in both the front and rear diffs and I use Redline Lightweight Shockproof in the subtrans. I ran a full race season with zero issues and the insides of my diffs and subtrans still look like new with zero noticeable wear on the gears or bearings. Redline Shockproof is awesome stuff!
