I was riding in Colorado last couple of weekends and noticed a gas fume smell quite often....mostly at altitude on steeper ascents ....
Tank cap is tight...
Is this common??

Only after Taco Bell. Those new fries are damn good i tell ya...

The gas tank vent on the 700 is in a stupid location directly under the passenger seat. You will smell it at times if you do like me and tend to over fill. If you are running any sort of shield or enclosure, you will REALLY smell it. Easy to extend. I ran mine up behind the headlight.

Ok .... thanks.... I wondered if it was about extending the vent to a different location....
Thank you for the info....

Yes, in my 1000-5 I have but not the other three. And then only a couple of times.

On occasion in my 1000-3, because I temporarily vented the tank to just behind the cab.. think I might change that. :)

I noticed the exact same thing with while riding in Colorado. Strong smell of gas. Cap was tight and no visible leaks.

I think they will have a slight fuel smell under the right conditions. Mine will do it under slow rock crawling on a hot day at low speed and its worse at high elevation. I think it the gas tank vent into the frame.

Ya gotta scratch your head at the thought process that says... hey lets put all the vents into the seat frame...?!??!

Maybe on your earlier smaller pioneers... but that one was plumbed into a hole on the seat frame just like the other vents under the seat.
Sorry, was thinking this was a 700 thread...but yeah, the 700 had it just hanging. I think the 500 is the same way.

In the frame seems like a better ideal, but wasn't there something where washing the machine caused water to get in the tank?

I have mine vented to the roof, 2 weeks ago while riding pretty slow, mine started squirting small amounts of gas out the vent. My wife was riding in the passenger seat and it shot goes in her hair. Clear vent tubing and you could see the gas pockets rise up the vent. Stop and checked cap and actually blowed back through the vent to make sure it was not restricted somehow but it wasn’t. Just got back from a 2 day ride from Royal Blue, no problems at all on that ride. Strange I know?

@CPope check your routing carefully, any low point will function like a plumbing p trap.
