Thanks @Hondasxs and @sajnaj for your replies.
Imagine this. 1000 hd of Brahman weaners moving through a series of paddocks for 10 miles at say 3 kms per hour (1.88 mph). It takes just under 5.5 hrs with an operator behind and to the side and dogs steering the sides. If the SXS only engages at 3 mph that necessitates 5.5 hrs of start/stop operation which is extremely tedious and very hard on the clutch, if, however the clutch is fully engaged at 1 mph then it is possible to cruise along at the correct speed using throttle to speed up and slow down without the necessity to stop. Also much of the terrain is very rough with fallen timber, tussock grasses and melon holes making a 3- 3.5 mph traverse extremely rough.

Sajnaj, you mentioned a programmer, what is it and is it an option to achieve the result I am looking for?

That's a unique use, I don't think the Honda guys designing it took that one into consideration, you're right it would be rough on the machine and tedious on you. Not sure if a programmer would help, there's probably a reason it doesn't engage that slowly in the first place.

Going off what @Hondasxs and @sajnaj said. A 700 might be better considering it has the automotive style automatic transmission, a CVT is like you said going to require a much higher rpm to engage the clutch.

I just tested last evening and 3 mph is the lowest speed that can be maintained smoothly in either high or low.

Just for fun I wanted to see how slow I could go on my p500. I was able to maintain 1-2mph pretty easily. It didnt seem like it was slipping the clutch but hard to be sure. I do think idling anything around that slow all day would be hard on it, not sure how long it would last...could be tough on the clutch and engine. Anyway, maybe goto a dealer and try some different machines with a GPS to see what works.

the only other thing I could think of would be a hand throttle just like one on a lawn mower so u could set ur engine speed manualy.

I agree the P500 might be better suited for that speed as 1st gear is labeled low for obvious reasons lol I prefer a horse when pushing cattle but I recognize the need to do it other ways. The ole' crazy brahmers I'm used to dealing with average closer to 15mph than 2
