I have been a Honda fan since the early '70's when I was young and racing the Elsinores. Have had several 4-wheelers, but when sxs came out, Honda was nowhere to be found. Had a Yamaha, John Deere, and Kubota. Then last week, I saw the new Pioneer 1000-5. Gotta have one, I think. I have been doing research on this forum and another pioneer forum and keep seeing these complaints about burnt clutches and sucking up water. I don't do stupid stuff, or fast stuff, but I want Honda reliability. So, will you guys tell me if I need to wait a while for Honda to fix the bugs? I plan on buying in the next week or so, and had already made my mind up on a Polaris until I saw the Honda. Thanks.

Just get it. You'll be fine.

I was in the exact same boat.

Elsinores in the early 70s as a kid in my 20s. High mileage Honda Ranchers in AK as everyday drivers that absolutely refused to die. 10K miles of completely trouble-free rock crawling on my 2004 Rubicon down here in Nevada, still running strong.

I was going to buy a Ranger two years ago, after riding a Pioneer 700 on the dealer lot and thinking what a POS. But we decided to stick with our tried and true four-wheelers another year or so. And did.

Then last year I went to my dealer with cash in hand, ready to drag home a 2016 Ranger. Drove it, then drove a new 2016 P1000-3 EPS.

The P1000-3 EPS lives at our home now. 10 months, 1,100 miles later. We don't abuse it, but it's certainly not babied. We love it.

Only issues were cooling system not being filled/bled properly at the factory or dealer, causing overheating on long climbs. And, the stock tires are absolute crap and will puncture just looking at them crosseyed.

Those issues aside, this machine is a beast and we have no regrets at all.

Have two Rangers and a PK3. The Rangers brake, a lot. Steering arms, axles, CVs and belts, just this past season. Ran the Pioneer very hard and messed up one CV boot because it got packed with snow and froze overnight. The next day it ripped off. There are a few mods that I consider a must before you do much riding with the Pioneers. Snorkel being number 1 and extending your vent lines is number 2. Then add the blower to help the heat problem. The stock tires are a joke. Most other mods are great additions but not necessary to prevent serious damage due to average riding most guys are doing.

Man.. I was concerned when I was looking and finally I just pulled the trigger. There are some design oddities but they are easily and cheaply fixed. The clutches are the only "real" issue... you'll know soon if you have an issue and Honda is taking care of them. I've been impressed with mine and don't foresee any issues. There are far more machines without problems than with.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the new machine lol. Make sure to put pics up when you get it. Awesome machine! I'd agree with all above statements on what's needed or possible problems. It's a damn small list. Do the snorkel as said and enjoy!

Finally pulled the trigger Tuesday, a 1k5 deluxe, white. Just got in from the third evening in a row taking it behind the house in the mountains. Great ride!! Glad I didn't buy one of those rubber band drives. That said, I noticed a few things that need fixing: first, the heat!!! But everyone here knows that and I have been working on it all afternoon. (thanks for the pictures and instructions). Next, the throttle needs a block by the pedal to prevent whiplash in low range. I like manual much better than auto, but its really not manual, is it? Try to upshift if it thinks your going too slow, it won't shift, and if you are tooling along in second, and it decides you really mean first, it does it for you!! The gearing could be lower in both high and low range for this area, but I'll get used to it. All said, I can already see I have a new addiction, trying to make it perfect!!

I've been an addic for 10 months now. I promise to stop thinking of mods. I promise to stop staying up at night looking at Honda porn.

Welcome to the club! Hope you enjoy! Remember- drive it like you stole it and she will do fine!

I started out babying mine but after I had 50 miles on it, decided that it was time.

WOW!!!!!

Once I started treating it like a Honda and just driving as fast and hard as conditions allowed, the shifting got smoother and everything about the machine really seemed to come together.

Took it out this weekend, finally got some time to really get used to it, get some mud on it. You guys are right, the shifting is getting much better, will probably give it its first service this week, so I'm expecting it to smooth up even more. Made a couple of modifications, one is to put a wood block right next to the throttle, making it about 1/2" lower than the foot feed. Makes a lot of difference when creeping around in low range. Plenty of room to scoot your foot over to really use the throttle when you want. Mounted a overhead gun rack in front, the larger cab on the Honda leaves plenty of room for a rifle and scope. Still looking at a snorkel, looking especially at the home-made ones in other threads. Will post pictures when I get mine done.

Just sold my 2015 Ranger to purchase a P1K5. Polaris is a throw away ride.
