Is there an existing list of the states that have trail width restrictions? I'm thinking this will effect wether I buy a 500 or a larger variant. it it worth it to stay small? I live in NC and from what I understand, is that over here you cannot even ride UTV's in the national forests and are restricted to ATV and off road parks. Out west NF and BLM roads are all fair game on ATV's etc....? I'm wondering is are the 50" restricted trails enough in number and awesomeness to warrant buying the 500 for said trails, or buy one larger like the 700 or 1000 for the regular roads?

i don't know if there is such a thing. i know in my state (NH),the southern part of the state is limited to 50", while most of the north country is some where over 60" and they can ride the roads in some towns. I think you will be better off checking some of the areas you think you may want to go to and see what the restrictions are for that area, the internet is a great source.

Colorado according to US Forest Service.

Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV)-
An off-highway vehicle where passengers ride side-by-side. UTVs greater than 50 inches in width are not allowed on Forest Service ATV trails. Colorado does not recognize most UTVs as street legal.

Colorado has a lot of restricted trails on BLM and on Forest roads but there are a lot of unrestricted road as well. With the places I go the 50" width on the P5 is a must but the Forest Service and BLM is closing more and more roads and trails to motorized vehicles all the time but they talk about or are building more mountain bicycle trails for that select group of people that don't even have to license their bikes so everything for them is free....go figure.

One of the main reasons I bought one is because I cannot hike anymore because my knees are shot. There are so many reasons to have pure dislike for the gov. Shutting down access.

I know of a handful of 50" trails in Idaho. Ended up with the P5 because where we hunt has one that we use all the time. I'm pretty sure all FS roads are safe to ride on if your licensed properly. I know there are some BLM roads that you can't ride ATV or UTV on.

I found this list regarding state by state laws regulating ATV's. do the UTV and SXS's fall under the same regs?

Start a list here. Here's the Michigan info. Most trails accommodate wider SXSs and the ATV only trails are for machines 50" or narrower. There's no shortage of either type of trail.

I was thinking about doing a list, but that's a lot of work.

It'd be nice to have the best and worst areas to ride. Maybe some way to keep up the the ever changing access and up to date road closures.
