Been getting concerned about the Talon’s low range over here in the steep Rocky Mountains. I know the Morris Brothers in Dallas are working on one. Anybody know of anyone else working on one?

I need a lower low and reverse reduction on my 1000-5. I figured Honda would have addressed this or it would be almost nonexistent due to the horse power of the Talon.

It’s not a horse power issue, it’s gearing. But as I understand it, they’re making one for the pioneer too.
This will be good because it won’t affect high range......

Yeah, I get that it’s not an HP issue. I like my high range just fine, I just need more low for my 30” tires. If I had 104 hp I probably wouldn’t notice it as much. But let’s be honest, low is never low enough.

I meant to post this...

If anyone is interested (or curious), I was able to contact Danielle at Reduction Boss Machining. Here is the scoop on the Talon IGR...
  • They offer 25% gear reduction.
  • They are currently 4 to 6 weeks out (mainly due to material supply issues). You need to contact them to get on a waiting list.
  • Once they are ready for you, you must send them your Rear Cover Spacer and Bare Clutch Hub from your machine (or buy new ones if you don't want any down time but they are very expensive ~$800).
  • Kit price is $1,150. Not sure if that includes a few required gaskets and o-rings or not, I will find out.
  • You will need 2 SpeedoDRD units to correct the shifting and another for the speedo if you want to correct that. They are about $70 each.

Yep, that’s what’s nice about what the Morris bro’s are working on, installs in the sub trans and reduces low range only...👍

And yeah, you can get low range low enough. What do you want 15%....30%???

Not quite, it’s hard to find that optimal range without testing. I don’t think it would take much, maybe another 6% in my opinion. I still want low to be lower but still functional for overall use.

15% is the least I have heard of, and what I’ll likely go with...

25% is going to be too much reduction for my needs. Thanks for posting that though. I’m going to contact them and see if they are doing 10-15%....

I would agree with you on this. I am running 30% gear reduction with portals but my tire measure out at 34.5". Check my math but I am running about a 11% gear reduction over all (top speed is 59 from 66 mph) and think that low range and reverse is much better than stock over all. A 15% reduction in low and reverse would be optimal to me and the way should have come from the factory.

So you’re reducing both high and low?

just asking, but if only did low side, I would think the shifting would be messed up on low side or if did the speedo thing, then high side. Am I over thinking it?

You are correct. If you only change the Low gear ratio and want to compensate for the difference, you will need to reprogram the Low shift tables in the ECU.

However, in low you go through the gears so quickly and low is used more for climbing and technical that I think Low range shifting will be fine (or at least tolerable). improper DCT shifting seem to be more prevalent in high range than low (at least that is my experience with larger tires).
