Very weak signal here in Elk City, can’t seem to quote a post, but yes, we’re still alive CP. Woo Hoo, just arrived here at 3:30 local time (pacific ???). Did the MC east to west and my what an epic journey. Met various people in trucks, jeeps, dual sports, quads, SXS’s and floaters on the Selway.

Left Darby at around 10:00 am Saturday headed south on 93 for 2-1/2 miles doing 45 mph (65 was the Hwy speed limit) which was the comfortable max speed with a 1000 lb trailer in toe and the SXS bed full, and squatting a bit. :D

Made a right on 473 following the Bitteroot River on a small paved road (45 mph speed limit) and held 40mph on that for several miles where we stopped and picked up a map and the squaw had to ask a ranger if there were any grizzlies in the FCRONR Wilderness and he just looked at her. So she said tell me the truth, and he said yes, a few some of them are collared and tracked....

She took it well though....He said don’t be stupid and you’ll be fine, wished us well and told us to turn right on the Nez Perce trail in half a mile.

We made that right and stopped to look at the map, check the load etc and he drove by. After a few minutes he came back and pulled up to us because he thought she was scared and didn’t want to go and he wanted to encourage her about it. That was nice for her.

At the first Ranger Station

Great pics man! Glad you're havin a great time! There is SO much country to see up there!
That’s for sure. It’s really an amazing feeling being so deep in a wilderness like this. Congress created this wilderness in 1980, The River of no Return (renamed the Frank Church River of no Return Wilderness in 1984) and created a 300’ easement through it, the corridor, for the department of agriculture with restrictions of fire rings, vault toilets, picnic tables and signage. No motorized vehicles outside the corridor. You can walk or ride a horse anywhere though and there’s mule outfitters that will take you deep, I’ve seen three so far.

After leaving the Magruder Station, we followed the Selway for about 20 miles to our first camp at paradise...

Thimble berries grow all along the banks of the Selway, a tasty raspberry like fruit that I really liked.

There was about five other camp spots occupied, one with about 20 youngsters embarking on a six night 300 mile float trip down to about Lewiston, I think they said...

More thimble berries and we crossed the Selway on a CCC bridge. Won’t see the Selway again till the return trip.

Also one of the Mule outfitter camps. The climb up out of the Selway was a grueling 12 miles, 1st, 2nd and some 3rd in low range. The trail too narrow for any passing traffic for long distances with near vertical precipice on one side or the other, very dry powder like road with tennis ball size rocks that would spin a wheel and pop. Had to stop multiple times and let the Pioneer cool off.

Every time we crested another climb, the view of the rugged mountains just seemed to go on forever....and seldom did we travel more than an hour without passing another traveler in the opposite direction. Visited trail side briefly with two couples in RZR’s loaded down with gear who were doing the MC/Lolo loop, 800 miles in 4 days, they couldn’t talk long, they had to maintain 25 miles an hour to keep schedule which allowed for no scenic stops or side trails. They wished they had scheduled a week for it!!!!!

We made a very long decent, dropping over 3,000’ and it was about 6:30 pm when we arrived at the confluence of Poet creek and the Red River which looked like a very nice place to camp. Unloaded the trailer and gear and went to cut a jig of firewood. After dinner we enjoyed a glass of wine watching a doe forage across the River.

The Green Mountain lookout was a 4 mile out and back. Met a guy in a 1 ton Dodge Ram with a big ass camper on it pulling a Samuri. We were 27 miles from Elk City and the road was improving. He said he was headed to Darby, that folks in town told him he could make it....

He also had no reserve fuel, and had already used a fourth of his diesel according to his gauge. I gave him my two cents on what he was about to encounter and wished him luck....:)
