My RMP ones have been beat to heck nothing wrong with them. They cover a whole lot more than the ones you have. I ride it logging country too. No sticks have hit my boots.
I started working on the Pioneer repair today and found something interesting. The guard is actually bent. You can see the impact mark on the lower A-arm and guard. The plastic ones would surely fail with impacts like this. It may be in my best interest to stay with aluminum guards.
I don't know. If something hits the RMP guard like that it will bend(like the aluminum did) but then it goes back to its original shape. I really don't think a hit like that will break that special plastic they use based off of what I've read about it.
I just wish the guard had deflected the object. I would think that the metal would have a better chance than the HDPE guard.
I did choose to use UHMW skid plates for the exact reason you stated. They will take abuse and return to their original shape.
I do think that the object that hit the guard and boot will happen again. Impacts like that don't happen very often. The most important thing I will consider for the new guards will be coverage, then strength.
I've had these on since August, I have beat on them hard.
There are some gouges but they've held up really well, sticks, rocks, brush, trees, barbed wire (someone tried to block a trail)
How is the coverage on the back side of the front guards. I think them are the ones that has very little coverage on the backside but not sure. I have seen a few with hardy any coverage on the backside it's like a trick some companies do, just show a pic from the front and the backside is wide open. Just make sure these aren't like that. That's how i busted one of mine (before guards) Backed over a stick.. You need good coverage on both sides not just going forward. Also they all get mud and other things stuck in the guards just keep it cleaned out.
That's one important thing to consider. It also seems that no one is making a guard for those that are running after market wheels with different backspacing.
Thanks for the heads up so far. I'll update this thread when I make a decision.
