Wow that's crazy... This is another reason I stick to synthetic oil. In a situation like this, every little bit of extra protection helps. A few extra seconds of running without oil might be all it takes to seize something up, and maybe synthetic buys you a few more seconds before failure.
I guess this theory could be tested, but it would be an expensive experiment!
