My thoughts were to stand the aux battery up and not lay it down on it's side in the battery compartment.

The sheet of rubber is not only for electrical insulation to avoid shorting on your mount, but also to avoid abrasion from the screws rubbing on your battery case.

Use tapered head screws and countersink them. I did something very similar and used a combination fuse block / relay block, but it was just too complex. I stripped it all out and just went with a small fuse block.
