If anyone is interested, this is what a P1K exhaust interior looks like:

What do you guys think the function of this is? It's after the O2 sensor, right at the mouth of the weld to the muffler can.

Here is a pic of the failure before disassembly:

That looks to be the catalytic converter.
I'm showing my age. The last I heard of catalytic converter design, they were using pellets instead of precious metals. Early 1980s and before. Thx!!

@0860silverado might be worth a few phone calls to different dealers.
If @lee has heard of an emission warranty, it may be a good idea to dig deeper. Bypass the dealer and call Mother Honda, express the possibility of bringing this to the attention of the epa of your state.

I never thought of that and thanks for your input! Another thing I could've scared them with is the fact that the exhaust gas is no longer going through the spark arrestor. But it's too late. Bought a used one from eBay for $175.00. The only reason I can see for failure is that it looks like the robot ran out of rod or whatever they use to weld these things. Some spots have no weld at all.

Plus, I can't afford to have my machine stuck in the repair shop while they wait on parts for the exhaust cover recall.

I do not know whether Honda makes these themselves, or if they have a supplier.

I work for an OEM manufacturer of exhaust. I’d like to say we have robots welding on stuff, but we don’t. We have a weld cell with a few people tacking and welding. Might go with robots one day, but I don’t think we could warrant that anytime soon, we would have to double our current sales to even think about it.
