Question, I'm new to the side by side and new to the Honda family. I have a 1000-6 model, 80 miles on it and coming close to the 100mile service. I have only drove it around my community, no dirt roads or off road yet, engine sounds fine per what I could tell. Do you guys think it should be a good idea and still take it to my Honda motorsports dealer to have the valve inspected? The service is not crazy expensive about $460 or so, for everything that calls out for in the service manual. Was considering on doing the filter and oil change myself, but I'm still debating due to the valve inspection per the manual...?? Thank you!

Personally, I wouldn't take it to the dealer for anything. But you'll get varying opinions here. I would do all my own work, BTW. Avoid the dealership unless absolutely necessary. If you do your own work, you learn about your machine. The tech @ the shop isn't going to be with you if/when you break down on the trail, so you'll need to know how to fix your own machine - or walk. ;)

PICS OR YOU DON'T OWN IT! Better get them posted or the local sheriff will be along in just a few to scold you. :)

Welcome from MI!

@Scoop, I hear you. I'm leaning to doing it myself. I called their service dept, asked them if they actually see a good percentage of machines getting adjusted or not, they said about 70% get a slight adjustment or so. But, IDK.. I also extended my warranty 4 more years when I purchased it. Just wanted to see what you guys think and how many do really needed adjustment for their valves at 100 miles. Thx

I don't want to talk you out of getting them checked, as it's your machine and your investment. You do what is best for you and what you feel comfortable with having done (or not done), that's for sure.

I will point out that, unless it's been changed, the owner's manual says valves will need adjusting again only if they get noisy.

But if it's going to cause you to lose sleep at night, by all means, get 'er done.

Per Service Manual listen for valve clatter, none heard good to go. Do the service your self

I have two 1000s with a total of 18,000 miles and I've never checked the valves on either one. I know multiple people with 1000s that have never checked there valves. I'm not saying don't do it but there is plenty of proof that the odds say you will be fine.

My engine still sounds like new. I've been putting it off but I'm doing a valve adjustment check this month. I have close to 38,000 miles on my 2019 Honda Talon. My friend has done probably over 100 valve adjustments on this 1000 cc engine and only finds one out of 50 out of spec by .001". The note in the owner's manual says check the valves if noisy. I will do a report on my valve adjustment check. I checked one of my RZR's at 5,000 and 10,000 miles and it was still in spec. My other one had hard starting and a poor idle. It had 3 valves with no clearance. Pulling the cams to change the shims is a PITA.

Thank you guys, I really appreciate your guy's feedback. I mainly wanted to hear from actual owners. The service dept was telling me they make about 70% adjustments on the ones taken in, but he used the words slightly adjustment, on the exhaust ones. I might just the oil change and if something arises in the feature as far as noise then I will look into it. I don't really hear any noises. Thx

With all due respect, not all dealers are crooks in my humble opinion. I certainly have a ton of respect for my dealership where I bought my ride. Each dealership should be rated on their own merits, good or bad..
I never said nor insinuated that they were. I included my explanation why in the very post you quoted.

U are correct. Too many are so it paints many as tho. Took me a few to find a good one. Its like in my Trade of HVAC, the amount of Hacks out number the ones that are good and fair like our shop and It gives 90% of customers that same very thought process. Delt with a customer today that was screwed by a hack shop and we had to take measures to gain her trust. Its a tuff world out there these days.

So a follow up question on the initial 100mile service. I have seen people in YouTube replace the front and rear gear oil, the manual states to “check levels” but on the second chart it specifies replacement every two years. I’m sure it won’t hurt to flush at 100miles but am I’m missing or not reading correctly..? It states check level not replace, just like the brake fluid etc. only specifies to replace engine oil and oil filters.

Where are you getting your oil change kits for the 2023 1000-6? All I am seeing is 2022 or older. I am guessing the 2022 kit will work but thought I would ask.
