It's funny you say that, mine sounds better standing away from the cab too.
I put mine in the toolbox to be protected from mud and water.
Cut in multiple vents to let the sound out.
Bassey as hell when you open the toolbox.

noise/heat Barrier. ..which
cut the cab noise at least
in half....stopped heat totally

Ported takes less power for bigger boom.
My 8" is ported. Now you just gotta keep it dry.
