P1000 PSA - Honda Pioneer 1000 Air Box Removal Trail Tool box Addition!

If not you should think about adding one ASAP!

Let's say something happened while out on a ride and you needed to access the air box on your Honda Pioneer 1000. Do you have the tools do to so? Normally, almost every air filter on a Honda SxS or ATV could be accessed without tools or just a basic screwdriver. That was until the Pioneer 1000 hit the market.

I am usually a prepared guy and carry enough tools to disassemble my Honda ATV out on the trail. Over the past few years, I have been slowly upgrading my box to fit the needs of my 700 and now my 1000. But today I was stumped in my own garage while trying to disassemble the air box on the Honda Pioneer 1000!



A 5mm long-arm hex key was in need and I couldn't find one to save my life.
I finally survived by using a 3/16 hex bit on a socket. After dropping it a few times I switched to a magnetic screwdriver bit extension. Then I was able to get all the bolts loose for the air box. Setting it back up posed a challenge. I stripped one then a second. Finally, I just decided to lightly tighten them and will just buy a 5mm long-arm hex key for my trail tool box!



I would actually recommend a full long arm set.
Maybe just throw the metric in your trail tool box and leave the standard in your regular tool box.

Not much for basic tools supplied. Not even a tool to adjust the rear shocks. Now that pissed me off.

I would stay away from "ball end" Allen wrenches. In my experience the ball end breaks off and/or they are more likely to spin in the screw turning the Allen slot from a hexagon to a circle.

If you already have ball end style you can just cut the ball part off

I will add the 5mm Allen to my kit. I carry one of them Cruz Tools. Not sure, but it might have a 5mm Allen, but I know it won't be a long one. I've carried a Cruz Tool for many years, on all types of motorcycles, and they work pretty well for how small they are.

Lmao I was just about to suggest using a ball end lol. Guess experiences vary but I have had good luck with them (I only use bondhus brand). I have a long T-handle 5mm ball end that I use for stuff like this.

I think most people would choose something like that and they would be SOL if they needed to clean there air box out on the trail.

Totally agree. For Allen bolts the Allen socket is my first choice if it fits in the area I'm working on.

Ha that's funny. I'll say that they are nice when they work! My problem is I'm usually working with smaller rusty screws that require a lot of force so that's probably where my problems stem from.

I want to cuss whoever designed this air box lid out... OMG should not take a special tool and 30 mins to get the lid off....

But then again....
1500 miles and she is as clean as a whistle.
