I have been mowing 5 acres with a Swisher finish cut mower for 16 years (same mower) and an ATV.
We have 1 acre of lawn and 4 of fields.
Some years there is corn or cows in the fields so no need to mow as much.
Mower maintnace is critical to keep it going.
I have 3 sets of blades that I rotate as needed.
Need to rebuild the blade spindles every other year and a new set of belts every year.
This mower is no where as robust as the brush hog.
2 years ago I finally broke down and bought a brush hog to use behind my TE20 tractor.
The tractor is the way to do the fields (still, using the tow behind on the lawn).
Much more capable to run through tall grass ~ waist high.
This means I don't need to stay on top of the fields, the mower did not like foot tall grass at all.
Needed to raise it up all the way for a 1st cut and make a 1/2 pass to keep from torching the belt, then do a 2nd cut.
But, I'm kind of partial to the tractor, 1949 TE20 parks next to my 1947 Studebaker coup.
So that colors my thinking.
Foot note, I keep telling my wife I'm going to let the yard grow and bail it but she hasn't approved that plan.
