My rear output shaft u-joint boot is torn. I'm tempted just to remove it and run the bare u-joint until the joint gets play, which may take years, esp since its only $50 or so. My only concern is getting crud in the splines on the shafts and causing wear.

I know they are sealed with an o-ring from the outer ends, but are the splined holes for the shafts on the u-joint assembly itself blind, or open to the inside? Can't really get a good look without tearing the rest of the boot off.

I've had this part off of a 700, but honestly don't remember if it was open.

TIA.

@Montecresto might know, I think he had a torn boot on the rear?

not going to be years if the grease is gone
there was a guy on here that sealed it with boot repair, seemed to last
personally have just took the shaft out and changed it normally not that big a job, probably 20 for the boot

Answered my own question this morning. Went out to the machine and took a second look, and there, clearly, was the spines sticking out on the shafts on the inner sides. Looks like a boot for me...
