If the rear springs have 6" of travel, does this mean they need 6" of clearance above them,I am attempting a few modifications and need to know how much clearance I need above the tires
Any info would be appreciated.

No.
The wheel has 6 inches of travel, not the shock/spring. The shock will be less then that by a good bit.
Travel is the distance from fully compressed to fully extended.

Thanks, so would 4" of clearance be enough above the tire?

Not really sure.
Dont quote me on this..
Jack the unit up off the ground. Measure from the top of the tire up 6 inches. that should be the max compression point.
The factory suspension should not go out of that range.

Also take note the diameter of your tire become larger the faster it spins so you may want to make sure you leave enough clearance, most modern 6 & 8 ply tires wont expand much but an inch off may cause some annoying rubbing if running WFO @ 40 mph and you hit a bump or are loaded heavy.
