A few years ago I was in this area above Kelvin and attempted to go around a deteriorating road. I was in the 500 at the time, and I remember a particularly off-camber section of the trail that stopped me.
The trail is always kicked around in the back of my mind, so today I took a look at it in the 700, and the off camber section seemed much better. It wasn't so much washed away on one side as it was a piles of rocks, so it wasn't really a big deal in the 700.
At the end of this trail I found a big open mineshaft. The air coming out of this thing was literally like it was air conditioned on this 95° plus day. The thing is, the mine had a little bit of a creep factor to it. And as I got closer to the entrance, that just increased; there were little handmade crosses stuck in the ground in a couple of locations. WTF?

As the kids say these days, the creep factor was "mega".

Rattlesnakes scare me!

A few months before we left west Texas I walked out of our old farmhouse one warm afternoon with the kitchen trash bag in hand, looking at the trash can in the old detached garage ahead of me. Without looking down I had stepped over a coiled rattlesnake, sleeping in the sun. My right hiking boot heel was planted on the gravel driveway about six inches in front of the snake and my left toe was a few inches behind the snake.

I happened to look down and saw that snake and probably jumped three feet straight up in the air shouting and waving my arms. Scared the hell out of this old man. When I could take a normal breath again I went inside the house and grabbed my old 20 gauge Defender and went back out and shot that snake into small pieces.

I know I looked like an idiot and am glad no one was there watching me.
