Speaking of Trail Maintenance and Development… Sort of off topic here. However, Anyone using a battery operated chainsaw? Any reviews or recommendations? Looking for something to easily carry on the P5 and also in a Jeep. I have been researching them but would really like some reliable - real world reviews. Thanks in advance.

I have the 12” 20 volt Dewalt and love it. It goes with me a lot and will really amaze you on how long it cuts with a full battery. I also have the 20 volt inflator which has been a life saver a couple times.

The wife uses a Stihl. I'll get the model number, it has the same battery as the leaf blower and weed eater. It is very light and has a 16" bar. It's an MSA 140.

Thanks! I will look into both of these.

I just bought a Ryobi RY40580 last month and mounted it up to my sled. It's a 40V with an 18" bar. Really nice machine.

So far I've used it to make 10-20 cuts a few times out on the trail, in 10 degree temps, and I haven't used more than 25 percent of the battery on one of those days.

I'm really loving the transition from a noisy, stubborn old two-stroker to this electric. No rough, boggy starts and long warm-up times. Quiet and quick.

And, no more carb maintenance.

For trail clearing work, this is plenty of saw. If you want one for actual wood harvesting, you might go with one of the 80V high-end units. They say you can get 200 8" cuts on a single battery with them. This 40V is good for me.

I got the little Ryobi 8" "pruning saw" + 2x 4AH batteries last year for like $80 or $100 or whatever the "buy 2 batts get free tool" promo was. it's a nice little thing, has it's quirks but its really compact.

I have an 18" Stihl that has been great. I have been looking at different battery operated chain saws and pole saws for small/quick jobs. I've been looking at the Kobalt 40V saws since I already have a few 40V Kobalt stuff. I'm definitely interested in hearing about different brands too. I know the 4AH and especially the 6AH 40V Kobalt batteries last quite a while running a 15" cut trimmer. I can trim my 1/2 acre lot in town 2 1/2 times on a single battery and that is with a chain link fence around 3/4 of the lot and plenty of trees.

Can anyone speak to the question of what brand's batteries transition to other tools in their lineup? For someone without an investment in battery powered tools yet, I'd think that could be a significant branch on the decision tree.

I bought the Harbor Freight one a little over a year ago. All i use it for is trimming/maintaining our trails. It works great and will do quite a bit of work on a battery. After a year though, I have started to have battery issues. Actually I think my charger went bad. I found replacement chains for it on ebay that cost $12 each and they cut wayyyyy better than the chintzy chain that came on the saw. I also bought the cordless hedge trimmer. It is awesome for cutting back rose bushes in the woods and it will run all day on one battery.

almost all of them. Most brands have a family of tools that will take the battery, chain saw, string trimmer, leaf blower, hedge trimmers, etc.

Check out EGO Brand. I have the 16" bar model. Bought it 3 years ago and still works great.

Can't speak to how well they perform or last but have been hearing a lot of good things about this brand, some being from equipment dealers. My understanding is that the batteries are expensive but last a long time. Some guys are buying used stuff that they already have just to get the batteries.
