I am looking into replacing my winch cable with synthetic rope, and I'm looking for suggestions. I have the Honda/Warn OEM Provantage 4500.

For those that have done this, what is the best diameter and length that will fit on the spool?

Are there any brands to stay away from?

Any other information you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I have never been to Alaska, so I don't know how the environment treats synthetic rope as fas as freezing solid if gotten wet??

Good point! I hadn't thought about that. It wouldn't be a good thing to have a rope frozen and not be able to use it. Maybe some of the others up here will chime in and let me know if they have one and how it works for them.

I don't believe it would be a problem.

There are some reasonably priced ones on Amazon, I saw one rated for 4500# for about $30. Thats cheap.

Can you put more length on if you use a synthetic rope than cable?

Yep. I saw some there and on eBay. I just don't want to get a crappy one.

I am wrong, If you did use it in sub degree weather and got it wet and spooled in,it could freeze solid. And my dad ordered synthetic for his and he got the same size as the steel he was replacing and it seemed to just fit. I like it cause it floats.

Not positive but I think you may want to use a synth plow cable for plowing, Instead of a synth winch cable.

I think there was an issue with the synthetic not doing well because of the sharp angle and it being run across the fairlead??

I think a synth plow cable is about $10-$30 after a quick google search

I've been considering an upgrade to as my cable has been getting kinks and frayed.

Thanks for bringing this up. I'll definitely be watching.

Bought 2. Still need to figure out how to weave an eyelet on the second one to use as an extension.

Actually, I've also seen ones with two eyelets for use as an extension.

My .02, get an extension that will handle double what your winch can pull so you can use one end as the attachment point for winch block. Otherwise you have to double it up as well.
