Last few days I have found myself researching the Honda Part Number System and figured I would post the information for everyone here to learn about as well.
General parts:
YYXXX - XXX - XXX(XX)
YY = Function Number
XXZZZ- XXX - XXX(XX)
ZZ = Component Number
XXXXX - YYY - XXX(XX)
YYY= Parts Classification Number
(These numbers relate to the Product Code of the first Honda motorcycle model to use a particular part; if the same part is subsequently used on another model, the Parts Classification Number generally remains unchanged. Some of these numbers are listed here. For more information, see the Parts Interchange Info page.)

YY = Modification Designation

Y = Subcontractor Designation

YY = Color Code (if any)
