How big of a tire can you or should you go on a factory talon 1000x-4? I had a mishap this weekend and somehow got a hole in the sidewall of both front tires. A buddy of mine has a set of 31s but I don’t know if that would mess up the transmission or anything like that.
Any and all info is appreciated. Thanks in advance

You will get opinions all over the place on that questions. Here are the facts...

31's will work OK, just keep in mind...
  • They might rub slightly on full left turn at full compression. Try to stick with more positive offset wheels to reduce any rubbings. Use +45 mm offset or greater up front.
  • If you want it square like the factory (same front/rear width), use 40 mm LESS offset wheels in the Rear or use the same offset wheels all the way around and 1.5" spacers in the rear.
  • Avoid the stock rear wheels, they will get easily damaged when you go to a narrower tire like a 9.5 or 10".
  • You will notice a power loss. At your Missouri altitude (~800 feet), it will be minor. At 5,000+ feet it will be quite noticeable. Just use low when trying to do anything that needs more torque (like rock crawling).
  • Your transmission may shift funny at first but the DCT has some adaptive learning and will adapt somewhat to most driving conditions. Just override shift when needed.
  • Your speedo will be off by about 10%. You can live with that or get a speedo corrector.
  • Don't overinflate. A lot of the tires out there are capable of handling a lot more weight than a Talon. Determine your loaded weight and calculate your tire pressure according to the max load of the tire. Your Talon's weight distribution is about 45/55 front to rear.
