I have a 2016 pioneer 700 and it has 1200 miles on it. I have checked for leaks and haven't found any. With 150 miles left till oil change I checked it and it was half a quart low. Any suggestions. Is this engine still breaking in.

When was the last oil change?

That does seem strange. Though, half a quart isn't much over that amount of miles. I don't think it should burn any at all.

The last oil change was 550 miles ago. It has 150 till I have to change oil again. I added to it and have it a thumbnail thick above the top line. I'm going to keep and eye on it. I don't really like how Honda recommends the oil to be checked but they designed it not me.

I thought oil changes were every 600 miles not 700

To me the oil check is my biggest complaint about the machine. We took it for a weekend camping trip last summer and when I checked it looked way low. I didn't have an option so I put some non recommended oil I carry in my truck to get by. When we got home, I started checking it like a hawk and I was over full. I've learned to start it up, and let it sit for the couple of minutes WITHOUT moving it, then turn it off and let it sit for the other couple of minutes. Then I check it. I'm a little OCD so I actually time it on my watch. It seems to me the temperature outside also plays a part in the amount of time it takes to drain back down. The mechanic moderator on the other forum recommends running it a little over full, to make sure everything is alright. I would say if you don't have any leaks and your air cleaner is farily clean and you haven't dusted the motor, everything should be fine.

As stated by honda "It is very critical that you use the correct viscosity of oil for the machine and maintain a check on the oil level using the proper procedures". The dealership sold me a gallon on 10w40 oil for my 16 700. It used 1 -1.5qt between 600 mile itervel and the transmission will slip if you do not allow it to reach full operating temperature before driving. I have had the 600 miler swrvice done using 5w30 and nor problems yet. Yes the procedure to check the oil is ridiculous.

I am currently using 10w30. Maybe I should change to 5w30

At operating temp there's no difference between 5w30 and 10w30. The 5w30 is actually better because it is thinner at start up and will flow more quickly.

Those viscosity numbers are measured using a viscometer. The first number is derived from the flow of oil thru the viscometer at 40°C and the second at 100°C.
