What winch do you have?
What winch would you suggest?
What problems have you had?
Is it Water Proof?
Are they hard to install?

I went with the Superwinch LT4000ATV synthetic, Superwinch LT4000ATV SR - 12v - 1140230 - Several sellers on-line.

Like @trigger I have used wire rope winches in the past and kinks are a pain and frays can tear your hands or clothes up. I agree with @Bad_bowtie about running cable to battery, put the unit on stand, remove all factory skids and run battery cable is the easiest.

So far I haven't used it to pull myself out I look at it kinda like insurance, better to have and not need than need and not have.

Similar to when we lived in Michigan, if I didn't mount the 8 ft snowblower on the back of my IH-766 in early October we'd surely get a ton of snow and deep drifts. But mounted and ready to go was much easier than not mounting and trying to dig blower out of a knee deep drift to hook it up.

I plow with mine so I went synthetic, can't stand cable kinks and frays. Been using this one for two years now, pulled me out of a mud hole too.
KFI Stealth 3500 lb. Winch: SideBySideStuff.com

Any chance you could send me a picture or two close up on how the KFI mounts to the Honda Pioneer 500? Reason for asking, I added the 700 bumper to my under and now, I'm curious how this might work without the stock bumper....

Badland 3500, came with switch to mount on roll cage and a handheld wired remote with plug, mounted plug in grille. It replaced first 2500 winch. Worth the $50 more for 3500, easy clutch operation with a twist. Def. go at least a 3500 size. Also like the wireless controller off internet for $15. Mounted on Strongmade bumper. Easy install. Only used for tree work so far. Someone said if no pics, then it didn’t happen, so heres a pic. LOL. Agree with running wire, (6ga. , added connection posts under hood, waterproof switched breaker (150 amp) near battery.. can throw switch to kill power when adding other stuff).

I put harbor freight badlands 5k on all my machines. They get used a lot and no failures as of yet. For 140$ on sale, they are hard to beat. A couple times a year I run the cable all the way out, take an old rag, use heavy waterproof grease and coat the entire line as someone reels it in. I've found this helps tremendously to prevent fraying. If and when it does begin to fray, I'll probably just replace it with the synthetic that harbor freight sells. I think it's around 20$

Some with winches , some without , so far a come-along would have handled everything just fine and a few times much better . Easier to pull from the side with a come-along instead of a mounted winch . In case you lay it on it's side . Thats my 2cents worth .IMG 6090

I have a 4000lb Warn with synthetic rope. I use it to plow snow, it's waterproof, and it's never let me down. I also have the wireless remote and highly recommend it!

I've heard good things about KFI and viper as well.

KFI mounting plate. The 700 mount should be similar.

I have ran synthetic for years and have never dried the rope. On my ATV is the winch was under water or in the rain all the time. Not sure why except maybe to keep from smelling moldy but not sure mold would grow on sprectra, dyneema or Kevlar or effect it if it did.

I put on a Superwinch Terra 3500 synthetic. I believe I’ve used it more than the average wincher... I used it to pull a walk-behind trencher 6 hours per day x 4 days. Lotsa heavy tugging and actually having to let the thing cool down occasionally. I’ve also pulled myself out of a few holes, winched more than 800 ft through deep snow with an ice-crust and dragged a Honda Rubicon up a 100 ft super steep hill after the atv cartwheeled down said-hill. I’ve never used a winch more. Really impressed with the thing. Easy to install. In fact I prefer installing it myself because I took the time to solder and shrink-wrap all the wires, greased the connections etc. I added a cheap remote control as well; it's worth it’s weight in gold. PS: I’ll never go back to steel cable.

I installed the breaker inside the battery box. Drilled a hole in the bottom and installed a rubber grommet to help keep the water out, removing the belly pans now so I can run the wires along the inside frame and zip tie them.
I'm retired so I have the time.
