Looking for some help, I bought a 2016 1000-5 from a family member. It has just over 500 miles on unit and it has been sitting for about a year. Put new battery and fresh fuel in today before starting it. Has intermittent code 23, runs and idles fine but ran it for a short run and exhaust got very hot. On that particular run it was showing no codes. I am assuming it is running lean. I'm also assuming it is the 02 sensor. Anyone thoughts on this? Thanks in advance.

I could be wrong, but I believe code 23 is O2 sensor. Could be a loose connection so check that first. I'm thinking when the O2 sensor isn't working right you end up with a rich mixture that results in O2 and unburned fuel from combustion burning off in the exhaust and raising the temp. Again, I could be wrong.

@YardDog is right. When an O2 fails, it fails full rich, so if the machine is running lean, it's something else. The 02 code is probably for a lack of signal or switch, or heater (if so equipped).

Yes 23 is o2 sensor, I'm thinking it's running very lean just not certain that is being caused by the o2 sensor.

And you are correct. A problem with the O2 sensor will make it run rich.

I think that's why Honda came out with the improved heat shield for the muffler?

I don't think so. Fuel burning off in the exhaust happens way before the muffler. The heat shield for the muffler is because the japs finally understood plastic melts in close proximity to a muffler
HA! I read an article somewhere on the high heat because of running rich, don't remember crap these days!
