I figured out the occasional bang on take off and just posted it with pictures. It occurs mostly when the engine is cold. I can feel it in the shift lever and it can be very intermittent. The gear engagement dogs can line up making it more difficult to go into gear. I should have 10,000 miles on it in a couple of months. Nothing broke but the air filter intake location is under the bed so I made an under roof clean air snorkel with a UNI pre filter. The Uni filter is still ok so I may get to 8,000 miles before I have to clean it. My stock air filter will be good for at least 30,000 miles or 10 years. The suspension is stiff on the washboard and boney trail. I adjusted the tender spring cross over rings up 10 turns in the rear and 5 in the front. I like to stay on the tender springs until they are near coil bind before the cross over to the main springs. There is more adjustment left so I may try to get closer to coil bind.

6000 with no real issues is great! It’ll take me years to get to that many miles, but it’s good to know the Talon is made to last. I’m waiting for someone to engineer a good air intake system that looks good and works good because buying a new $50 air filter every 300 miles can’t happen!

Thanks for the update and keep them coming!

Just install a uni or KN over the inlet tube inside the air box and you will pre filter the air and dust before it clogs up the oem over priced filter. Please note that you will filter the air with the add on filter from the inside out,,don't freak on the idea of doing just that,,,it will work perfect. If you use a KN be sure to use the pre filter wrap without fail. I have both types and both work just fine.

The inside the air filter case helps but it has to be cleaned frequently. I use a UNI filter up under the roof. I may have to clean it at the next oil change at 7,400 miles. Just being up in clean air makes a huge improvement.

Bob are you using only the inner filter, can't see the outer filter in the picture. That outer sleeve/filter is a PITA to remove and install without tearing.

Its a 2 stage UNI and if it is too difficult to clean I will just replace it every 7,500 miles. The main factory filter will be in like new condition for over 20,000 miles. I like the particle separator but I think its only necessary for racing or if you follow in the dust on group rides. We use a one minute separation and wait at turns on group rides. Off road riding may cost over $1,000.00 in factory filters to get to 8,000 miles. My buddies are getting 300 to 400 miles on the air filter. This filter has 300 miles on it. The Pioneer 500 and 700 will go around 600 to 700 miles so I made a under roof snorkel for them. All three Polaris models had to have a clean air snorkel.

I have the same part number filter but they must have changed them. My filter has foam on the end where yours appears to have a black plastic end. My outer filter only covers the sides and leaves the end a single layer of foam. Is is a PITA to slide outer cover over inner filter. Thinking about using only the inner or not oiling the outer filter. Here is a link to new filter.

Uni has several 3 inch filters, we may be able to clean them by just taking the spring out and washing them several times in hot soapy water. My Green Talon had about 6,200 miles on the UNI filter when I took this picture. I may have to clean or replace it at the next oil change. I just did a top speed run with 30 Terabites and it did just over 76 mph at 3,000 feet elevation so still getting good air flow. The filter may be ok to 10,000 miles.

This won’t restrict airflow volume too much?

It will get dirty fast so It may need to be cleaned after every ride or two. My buddy had his clog and the engine sucked it off the tube. Its better to route the air intake into a clean air area.

I camp out near Wickenburg during the winter. We do over 100 miles a day. One sand wash is over 30 miles long. In the summer I camp in the Williams area and can meet you there. I'm getting my 7,000 mile report ready, got 7,300 on it now. I did a little riding in Flag at the cinders and did 3 Mt bike races and training rides around the peaks starting at Schultz pass.

I know this is an old thread, but I am new to the Talon. I have ridden motorcycles for 50+ years, and ATVs for 40 years. I just put a deposit on a 2021 R yesterday. I probably won't get it until after Christmas. I have been reading, and know that the air intake is the first thing I must address. I can't believe Honda did such a poor job on this! Hondabob, I really like your approach to this. I like leaving the factory induction tube (I don't know the actual name!) in place, and extending the intake up under the roof. With the help of your pictures, i can figure out most of this. I am wondering where you got that tube with the slight bend in it? I think I want to run a rear windshield, so I am hoping to make that work with this intake setup. It is hard to visualize without a machine in front of me! Do you find intake noise to be any problem?

BTW, I live near Congress, AZ, and would love to meet up with you someday. And we have been making a summer trip up to Williams for the last few years. We love it up there. I have put 30,000 miles on ATVs in the last 10 years, although I have kinda slowed down in the last couple of years........

Thanks for your help!
