Something for you younger folks to explore! While looking at the (Helene) hard hit areas in Western NC today while riding in someone else's car, we became lost. Later found out we weren't supposed to drive thru but we got waved in. Google maps and other apps would not work due to poor cell reception, but Apple Maps worked most of the time. I did not pin my car when leaving it, but for some reason it had my car parked at friends house listed! So, it would give us moving map directions to my parked car. As I mentioned you must check it out--I am too old. But it gave us a map directing us back to my car. If you figure out why, might be a great thing to use when riding in areas where cell service is bad. Of course I would prefer gps, but should you find yourself (stuff happens) in such a spot, give it a try.
My friend is even older than me and lives in Hendersonville, but still got us lost. Old age comes for us all...
Our gummint really let those folks down due to racism and politics. Very bad in this area 8 months after storm.

The key is whether the application has the map in cache before you run out of internet connection. I don't know about Apple, but with Google you can tell it to download a region you choose ahead of time. Apple maps probably cached a larger area before Google did. If you had Apple maps open before you lost service, that would help (and if Google was closed until you were out of service, it couldn't update.)

Most of us use fully downloaded maps for off-road use so we don't need an internet connection at all. I do that with OsmAnd. My device has the whole state of MI already downloaded, and just uses GPS to determine where I am. I used it in Mexico as well, when I drove the length of the Yucatan peninsula. I just downloaded the whole country before the trip and I was good.
