I have a 2016 P1000-5. I took it to the dealership this was weekend for a recall notice I received in the mail.

Today they called and informed me my unit won't start and asked if I had trouble starting the unit. I let them know I drive it about 5 to 10 minutes each weekend and it always starts on the first key turn.

The dealership is informing me that I have bad gas and recommend changing the plugs and some gasket at a cost of almost $500.00. ($125 for troubleshooting).

The gas is about 5 months old and I used Sta-bil.

Does this seem strange?
The attached picture is the gas they claimed was drained from the tank.

I live 20 to 30 minutes from the dealership. I had been riding it around before I loaded up it up. And it fired right up when we unloaded it.
I'd go check it out in person, would hate to start jumping to concussions right off the bat! HA!

Oh no...

You said it ran before taking it in?
- how long?
- do you store it outside?
- does the dealer store it outside?
--- how many days did it sit at the dealer outside?
--- did it rain? Light or hard?

There is a known issue where the frame will fill up with water if left outside in the rain or heavily washed. Then it will pump onto the fuel tank.

Honda knows this.

If you store inside. I would be asking the dealer these questions and recording responses.

This was esecially bad with the 2016 and 2017 models.
There was even a service bulletin issued to honda techs about this. If your dealer is worth a darn. They will know where to find it.

I road it for about 10 minutes before I took it in.

I store it outside with a Honda Cover.

It started raining when I loaded it on the trailer. It rained heavy all the way to the dealership. In fact when we unloaded it, the rain was pouring down. I was completely soaked by the time I unstraped and backed it off the trailer.

The tech drove it around back not sure if it stored in a covered area or not. I will ask.

It rained Saturday, Sunday, Monday and today.

If there is an issue with the frame filling up with water, I am sure it could have happened when I was driving it to the dealership. Is there a fix in place?

Well. Shoot. I dont know what to say.
I'm 99% sure that's the cause.

I would ask for a good faith warranty claim but may be pushing your luck. Feel free to discuss what I have mentioned. I'm trying to find the bulletin but not having luck.

Be prepared for the dealer to play dumb in regards to this topic.

Then, you need to vent your fuel tank breather tube as soon as you get it back.

Wish you luck.

As for the "honda fix" it's just drilling a few addational holes in the tube where the fuel tank vents into the frame just under the passenger seat.

Not to swipe thread but shoot, not have to figure out how to cover up if camping. Got the itch to camp like the Emporium club member. Georgia options are limited tho......,

You need to vent this tube anyways. Problem solved. This single issue of a terrible vent location has claimed a many machines.

Wasn’t going traditional snorkel route but will look into the venting if needed.
Ya.
I'm not talking snorkel. You can go fairly deep without a snorkel.
Many have found getting stuck in a seat deep mud hole is all it takes. Its more security then anything.

Then again. It's not required.
I would drill some extra holes both sides of the vent and ride the heck out if it.

I wonder how many brand new machines were delivered with water in the gas tank, the dealer stores brand new unassembled machines out side, until assembled heavily wrapped in plastic, after assembly, out on the lot they go rain or shine?
