I don't know how to look at it honestly... It differs in different terrain and speed. Futz and I found that out the hard way at Hatfield and McCoy last year... after following @JayPo for a half a day (4Hours) we were sucking fumes, with no where near the milage we normally see.

That was 100% skinny pedal down, hilly 4WD trail riding; no 2WD paved, gravel or dirt roads.
I definitely was not expecting that consumption.
But it sure was fun!!

That's the wrong way to look at it. I get a good 12 hour (half day) ride in the mountains out of a tank.
Daily I too run in the mountains of nevada but I like to know how far to the next fuel stop. When i leave the vegas area it's 90 miles to purhump nv. Or 30 to state line The next fuel. I spend half my time in 4 wheel drive going up and down some really steep mts. Often not on trails. I have a compass so I know I'm going in the direction.

Off topic from cargo boxes, but I have a Rotopax spare gas container with included mounting bracket. Guess you carry something similar? Having been to Mercury/NTS, your area can be miles and miles of nothing around.
