Finally got a second chance to hunt elk with new shoulder season in Montana.
Packed, got out to a cabin on non plowed road, bypassing trucks were using chains, I was fine without them, BH 2.0 lugs bite packed snow very well. But once I got into open fields I was able to make only 300 yards, on some points I had feeling I was just floating on my skid plate and finally lost traction and stuck.
Tried to carry wood and pull some logs , no problem on road , but did not risk to test heavy load in the field.
I have 26" Bighorns 2.0. We did not get any cow today, but will try to have another trip soon and if I need to pull out elk cow from those fields, I'm afraid I will need to call for a help to someone with snowmobile.
Met two cat hunters today , they all rode snowmobiles.
1. Would chains help to get through powder snow, if yes share your experience and brand of chains?
2. Would you carry anchor , if yes, what type is best for winter (I've seen for sand only) , have not seen for frozen ground.
Thank you!
