P500 Finally got new wheels and tires.

OK, after much studying, researching, looking, asking ,general indecision and almost pulling the trigger and then backing out, I did it. I got a set of MSA M-20 wheels and Maxxis Bighorn (original) tires. 26x9x14 front,
26x11x14 on the rear. I've had the 500 for a little over a year now and I've been looking at doing this ever since I bought it. Put the pull off on my 2007 Honda Rancher 420, it was need'n new shoes, too.

OK, got to wondering about how an increase in tire size would effect speed and the governor kicking in at 42MPH. I previously have only had it up fast enough for the governor to kick in once on a long road run following a truck down a road up in Colorado. I was screaming by the time it got to that speed.
OK, went to deer camp this weekend and lined the 500 out on a slightly down hill run on a straight dirt road. Got it up to 42 mph according to the speedometer (didn't have my gps with me) and the governor kicked in. It kicked it right at 42, just like before the tire change, what I don't know is whether I was really running 42. I'll run it again soon, with a gps on board to check and see. I did plug it into a tire/size/speed calculator program I found online and it said : Speedometer showing 40 mph with 24 inch tires should actually be running 43.19 mph with 26 inch. So in theory I should be gaining 3.2 to 3.5 mph with the bigger tires at 40 to 42 showing on speedometer.

Just for giggles I ran the calculations on 27,28 and 30 inch tires. They came out as 40 mph with 24"= 44.85mph with 27", 46.51mph with 28" and 49.83mph with 30" tires.

Ran a lot in 12 inches of snow on the dirt roads and lots of mud at lower elevations. The tires did great. Cleaned out really well, gripped great. I bought a set of tire chains, just in case, but never used them or winch the whole trip. I made this trip 2 times last fall and once back this June, all with the stock tires, this was the first trip with the new Bighorns. I noticed no loss of power compared to the stock 24's. I'm sold on them.





When it's 12* you can make doors out of 50 gallon garbage bags, a blanket, tarp straps and close pins .

My questions would be, on a vehicle that already can be sketchy at times due to its HCG, does adding taller tires exacerbate that issue. And two, can taller tires be put on the stock rims, or must rims be replaced. Well, while I'm at it, how about question number three, lol. In a bind, can a stock tire and wheel from the front be used on the rear also, or in a remote place, would a guy need to carry one from the front and rear? Thanks

You can put 12X26 tires on stock tires, I went to 14X26 so I got new wheels too. If anything the rig is more stable with these tires than the stock, I guess the tall is more than made up for by being wider and stiffer. Handling is a lot surer. Slings mud more than before, finder flares are the next project.

The whole reason I bought the P-5 is because it fit in the truck. Wider wheels and flares defeats the purpose, and I slide between trees regularly as it is. I guess going taller without going wider would both look bad and be less stable than it is now.

I put 26" bighorns on stock rims. Still fits in my shorted f150. I think the "HCG" is BS. I ride hard and fast most times. I haven't come close to tipping it. And yes, in a bind u can use a front wheel on a back. Here's my setup.

I have driven several hundred miles of steep, twisting mountain trails in my P500. Since I put 28' Ripsaws on at about mile 11, I'm not sure if it's less stable now, but I have NEVER been concerned about tipping. It seems much more stable than a standard ATV, and has plenty of power to climb steep hills in 4th gear. I still haven't seen these supposed "design flaws". If anyone else has had the same experience, we might start a thread. Ha!

I have thousands of miles of use on multiple ATV's and UTV's, they're all different. There's not much more stable than a Polaris Ranger. The P-500 is far more prone to flip. But I love mine for its multipurpose of fitting in the bed of a pickup, sliding thru tight trails, fitting in my toy hauler, cost and durability. I use my P-500 differently than I do the Ranger, Hisun or Rincon, narrow as it is, it regularly gets a wheel off the ground, occasionally two, opposite sides and axles at the same time sometimes. Always good to recognize limitations while we're bragging on the positives.

No flaws...I've seen either.....take that back.... stock skid plate. ..sucks
