Huckleberry season!

Going to go try my hand at huckleberry picking tomorrow.

Haven't been since I was a kid, but my brother said he knows a good spot. Hopefully they are ready. Spotted some bushes a couple of weeks ago in the region, but they weren't ripe yet.

Wanted to take the Pioneer, but my dog has been left home the past couple of weekends, so I'll go on foot since he's too big and old for the Pioneer. We could both use the exercise, lol.

I'm sure some of the other Idaho and Northwest members have some insight into huckleberry picking.

Won't be in grizzly country, so no big medicine on the hip; just my trusty Glock 10mm.

We have tons of blueberry bushes but the snakes love them too. Thankfully no moose this far South.

Man I miss Huckleberries. AZ doesn't seem to have them in the high country. Huckleberries around Mt. Rainier are as big as blue berries.

Our best Huckleberry picking is in early August. I know of several good local patches in southeast Idaho, a few are in Griz country so you have to go big on the hip.

Over the years I’ve noticed that they flock towards a Pioneer, they will come from miles away even if eating from berry bushes. Especially if the Pioneer 1000 is at a slow rate of speed, stopped for a bathroom break or turned off while sleeping.
Apparently certain plastics in the Honda have been found to have a distinct smell that resembles dying salmon. Hunters lay the plastics around as bait even. Bear researchers now use either Pioneers on thier endeavors or pieces of plastic from them strapped to the machine to attract the grizzly so they can research and document the great beasts of the Pacific NorthWest.
