I knew about the increase and decrease of power assist as it can ramp up or down as heat increases. But you @JTW say he looses PS completely? Or just reduced assist?

Either way y’all got to spend more time in the cold creek water to keep those things cool!

So Dad has had an issue with his PK5.. when he’s driving slow and at full turn going around a tree or thru a ditch. He will loose power steering going back the other way. He took his in to the dealer this week for a couple issues and a final service before warranty is out and the mechanic told him that the power steering was normal and was a safety feature to keep the pump from burning out???? So before I call bulls***, I figured I should ask you all.

@Hondasxs @lee @JACKAL @CumminsPusher @Neohio @joeymt33 @knuckledeep @HondaTech
Bulls***. I've never lost power steering either direction from either of my 1000's There is something wrong whether it be not enough power from the battery, ground or the unit going out

Motor can over heat though, not sure what triggers the assist??
Could be a operator being a little hamfisted but the steering wheel. Turning it against the stops repeatedly I could get a hot

I call bull s*** (on so many levels).

As @joeymt33 pointed out what pump?

I would think the EPS has some sort of thermal protection that reduces the assist level if the motor (steering motor) gets hot.
Then it will turn it back up as the motor cools off.

Also I would think that the system knows when it is against the stop.
But some one should test this.
You can reach in and feel if the EPS motor is getting warm.
Check driving in circles against the stop vs almost on the stop.
(There are several that would do this and give us IR thermometer readings, @ohanacreek will post up FLIR pictures - but all we need is 'it feels warm' vs 'burned my fingers')
(As this involves thermal events @JTW should avoid doing this activity)

However the story would be so much more believable if it where @JTW unit and not Dads.
Is this like asking your dad 'I have a friend who is worried he might go blind if he doesn't stop' story.
Yea, you have a 'friend'.
(at least I knew to stop when I needed glasses).;)

Supper unlikely but - Dad isn't engaging diff lock by accident is he?
You should have talked him in to an -LE.

It would seam you have documented the issue before the warranty runs out.
Even if it takes a while to sort this it should be covered if you can convince them there is a problem.
Might consider that extended warranty, sounds like now is the time to decide.

He has a dual battery system.. but I wonder if his stock battery isn’t on the weak side? He rides it every day so it stays charged.
Check voltage on the main battery and check for moisture in thesteering eletricsl connector

When hes turning is the wheel all the way ln the locked to one direction or the other if its turned as far as it will go continued strain on the steering motor could thermal protect it ot a sensor getting stuck

I put it in 4Lock tripped the breaker going to my second battery turned the lights on high and slowly drove in circles for a min while I drank 3 beers

No change in the motor output and it was warm but I could keep my hand on it

The FLIR battery is shot and won’t stay powered on sorry @lee.

I’d call dealer for warranty.

I was going to ask, is he inadvertently or purposely running 4wd lock a lot, that definitely would give the eps motor a workout.

I mean it’s possible but I just found it odd that he’s has more than one to two occurrences. And I would have thought more folks would have experienced the same.

Might try having the dealer initialize the EPS. Kinda like the guys that reported different assist levels left vs right and a little "pulling" one way of the other. It might be a little off and allowing the unit to apply full power up against the stop. That would get 'er to heat up quick!
