It's time for my p520 to have its 1800 mile check and lube. I was quoted $932.00 for this service by the dealer. My acura mdx doesn't cost $200 for this service. How is this possible?

They're gouging IMO. There are no grease zerks. Change the oil and air filter. I'd change the differential gear oil while you're at it, 75/140 especially for your climate. No need to check valve clearance unless it's running bad. Mine is a '15 and I've never checked the valve clearance.

I just ordered the filters, oil, lube, spark plug and gap gauge on amazon for $75.00. I saved $850 doing it myself. I asked a second dealer and he wants 2k up front for the next 4 services. Plus pickup.

There you go. Mine hasn't seen a dealer since the day I bought it. Way cheaper and you know it'll be done right. 👍

Every screw type valve adjustment engine I've serviced has needed the valves adjusted at the initial 100 miles serviced and usually every other one after.

Just because it's running doesn't mean it's right .

What about valve adjustment on a new head on a 16 P1 w/ 4,500 miles? I believe they have shims?

When I hit 4500 miles I will consider a dealer. But for now they are ripping us off.

because they can

It’s not apples to apples - Acura ain’t checking valves, changing diff fluids etc.

while I agree that is a lot of Benjamin’s - it’s where this crazy world is at currently

Your right my acura mdx cost 80k and oil change, tire rotation, lube and everything else they do is about 100 dollars, plus they give me a loaner car free for the day. The sxs dealer is a rip off.

The Intakes are shims, exhaust are still screw adjusters.

Every 1000 engine I've inspected at the 1st service has needed exhaust adjustment. I think the factory may not be getting them as tight as they need to tbh.

Just completed the oil and filter change, air filter change, lubed everything, replaced the sparkplug, installed the heat shield. installed a TPMS system and all that took about 2 hours and cost less then $125.00. So the way I see it is I'm ahead $800. I'm sorry for all you dealers and shop mechanics but if your prices were reasonable I would have had you do it. Maybe its time you take a look at your pricing. Get your hands out of our wallets.

Yes and I don't begrudge you to make a living. I own several small very profitable businesses and know when your prices get too high you chase your away. You need to walk the line between profit and gouging.

My 2025 520 was due for initial oil change service a month ago. Dealer wanted $480 and I thought that was high! Was gonna diy but worried about valve adjustment--not a mechanic. Hired a friend who in his youth worked in motorcycle shops--mostly Yamaha and went to the schools. He performed the service for a couple hundred. Salesman told me the initial valve was important but thereafter the mechanics could just 'listen' to hear bad valve adjustment. I mentioned this to friend during servicing and he said that would not be true, depending on whether the valve clearance too close or far apart! He said any shop that's tightly run prolly would not allow the bogus listening excuse. I know-salesman-but he lives the lifestyle and owns several UTVs.
Beware

There are definitely some shady dealers out there. They know they have a captive audience andbplaynto it.
