Is this the first run with that air filter setup?
Assuming the lack of a cage is what did it in?

rule 7 at work - no good deed goes unpunsihedSo..... I took the car to a local MX track this morning to run some easy practice laps to see if I can drive with 1.5 hands and I killed it. 😟

Apparently the air filter collapsed and got sucked down into the velocity stack. Once that happened it sucked the filter oil out in those two spots and started inhaling dust. I didn't notice a problem until it was honed at least .030 or .040 over so now I get to pull the motor, disassemble it and get the block sleeved on top of having to rebuild it.

damn hope you had some good fun running some hot laps away
Put it in the book and move on I suppose? When are you thinking you'll be racing again?
any updates trying to wrench with 1.5 limbs
that’s great news !!!!!!Lots of dirt in the intake ports and lots of oil in the exhaust ports but I'm happy to say that the cam journals in the head look fine and with a good cleaning after it's disassembled will be as good as new. That is a huge relief as I REALLY didn't want to start over with a new head! 🤗

that’s great news !!!!!!
u get time to look at crank/rod bearings ?
My hunch would be the dirt got trapped hopefully in filter
How big a ring end gap u end up with -?
your "engine guy - POIDH" must be real happy - getting nice new strong rods and minimal boring work for the liners - might be close to size already - lol.......On another positive note..... My engine guy found me a set of Crower rods with ARP 625+ bolts for a steal on FB Marketplace the other day so I scooped them up and they will be here tomorrow. I wasn't planning on getting new rods unless mine were trashed but for the price I paid it was a no brainer.
im with ya - just got done a basket case I bought - guy told me it "ran" a couple of days ago but couldn't get it started now - I knew what I was getting - no water in radiators, head gasket was missing, ring was stuck in piston groove, no carbon on top of piston, could us a tape measure for the ring end gap, found liner past last bore - how it even made 50psi compression was beyond me - all fixed up now.I was slacking yesterday so I'm working on pulling the bottom end apart now and will know about the rod/crank bearings here shortly.
All the big particles look like they fell straight into the oil pan and went through the filter before entering the oiling system so I'm confident the crank is good. Even if the oil pump gears/rotors look OK when I get those sections torn down I'm going to replace them just for peace of mind. I can barely afford this disaster nevermind a second one! Lol
I'd say it has ALL the ring gap now. Cylinders are so worn that I don't thing there is even any squeeze left on the rings. 😆
The Talon is going down the road early next week.@Tramguage1 keep an eye on this for rebuild contacts/pricing.
