Hi all,
@HondaTech - Anyone :)
2017 p1000-5. Only 2k miles on machine. Riding in mountains above 10k feet I get a check engine 2 - 9 which is Intake Air Temp high voltage or open circuit.
Runs great around camp below 10k feet but as soon as I’m above 10k I get high idle and flashing check engine. Disconnected battery for 10mins no change.

Any ideas? Where is IAT sensor? So I can check plug and wires.

The IAT is in the airbox on a Talon, I'd look there -

Pulled IAT from air box. Had some dust in it. Cleaned and reinstalled. Check plug and wires all looked ok. Still have issue.

Ran into another p1k his was dieing randomly. Another p1k guy was overheating. They pulled thermostat and bled system. Said it was better.

Talon guy said he hand no issues. Problem is I’m riding with Polaris guy and his 1000 has no issues.

Not happy with Honda. May be for sale when trip is over.

I’ve had mine up to 12,600ft a few times, zero issues but mine is a 2021. The overheating issue is a known one that adding a fan override switch will help with. Something I also have is a tune, wouldn’t think that would be the answer though.

It’s worse today. Same code but acts up and camp now. Idles at 2.5k. Pulled IAT sensor and toned out wires from sensor plug to computer plug. Both wires tested ok. Tested sensor with volt meter and the voltage varies from 1.9xxx - 3.4xxx when I put in cold or hot.

How do you clear check engine codes?

No more riding this trip unfortunately, sometime it wouldn’t go into gear because idle so high. Had to shut off and but in gear as soon as started.

Another thing riding with Polaris guys. Of course no problems on there SXS but I have Honda reliability! 😂

Thanks for listening. Pissed, wanted to ride so many places and it acts up!

Wonder if your IACV is bad, stuck open or if the o-ring is bad, under 4-6 in the service manual it gives a list of possible issues for a high idle. But I’d say it’s either the IACV or a valve clearance issue.

I don’t see a code 2-9 but the code 9-2 could be trans related or PGM, have you checked for loose connections or grounds as both relate to voltage issues.

Thanks for the suggestions
I found check engine codes list on another forum. My light flashes 2-9 over and over.
Battery connections are tight. Checked ground on engine it’s clean and tight.

Link to service manual?

IACV is located where? Prob after airbox on top of engine by fuel injectors?

Pull the air box and it’s offset right in the middle of the two intake tubes, held in by 2 screws. If you remove the air box have someone turn the key on but don’t start it, you should hear the little 2step motor in it, if you don’t it’s either bad, stuck or a loose connector.

I bought the service manual but if you bump up your membership status here there is a free link in the supporting members section.

I pulled the sensor and it doesn’t move with key on. I can easily spin it with my fingers. Does it just read position?

If you don’t hear it when you turn the key on it’s bad. I don’t think the IAT has any issues and I wonder if that’s not a code 29-1 which is the IAC. I’d see if a local dealer has one instock or if Rocky Mountain has it and see if you can get it shipped where you are.

Thanks to all that responded with helpful info!

Gave up on the pioneer and came home early. Started testing plug wires for IACV at home and none of them had voltage when key on. All wires looked ok… Toned all them out from IACV plug to ECM grey plug (under driver seat). 1 wire Intermittent and 1 wire wouldn’t ring out. Looks like the problem is broken wires at the IACV connector. Again they looked fine but when I pulled insulation back at the plug sure enough thin wire was broken.

It’s a shame Honda used such small gauge wires. With all the engine heat and vibration no wonder why they broke.

My fuel injector wires seem ok. Guess I’ll electrical tape them up from rubber loom onto plug to give them some extra rigidity.

Ordered a new plug and will attempt to crimp onto factory wires. I’ll update in a week or two when new plug arrives.

Do not use "Crimp" connectors that is a recipe for disaster. They will break at the crimp, sooner or later. There is only one proper way to attach a new pigtail, that is solder the joints and insulate with high quality heat shrink. Use rosin core solder, not acid core. Use .032 Multicore or silver bearing solder. Also clean that plunger and the bore of the throttle body to remove ANY signs of dirt, varnish or carbon.

Thing is while this stuff happens it isn’t something that happens constantly, don’t let it get you down on the pioneer.
