Does the 2500 have a HEMI or a Cummins? Wind drag will affect towing as much as weight. Our Cummins never looked back on whatever we towed, the HEMI, as with all gas burners, doesn't tow as well.If you have a drive on lift gate with expanded metal wire it definitely has a LOT of wind drag.
2500 with the 6.4 L Hemi, and yes the trailer does have a lift gate

Well I hate to say it but a combo of the HEMI and the lift gate is 90% of your problem. If you could eliminate the gate by adding ramps you would probably see a good bit of difference. I have the 5.7 HEMI with a 6.5x12 single axle with a liftgate and it is more of a pull than our gooseneck tandem axle horse trailer.

I guess i made it sound more dramatic, i can punch it and pass cars and cruise 75 but i just felt like 1500 pounds shouldnt even know its back there

Don't feel like the lone ranger on this one. I have a 07 Cummins and I can definitely tell it is back there when I'm pulling it by itself. Taking the windshield off helps, but you can still feel it.

I have no issue at all. But I also have lots of goodies under the hood
2012 ram 1500 lowered with a 16' tandem

You have to remember that truck is already heavy and your adding more weight and drag. The 2500 should have never been offered with 6.4

I tow with a Silverado 1500 W/T with the small 6 dragging a Cam tilt double axle 6x12. I feel the (combined) weight back there, but it's not a hard pull or stop, even with the hills in PA. Wondering if you have a transmission issue?

I spent a week pulling it through them hills this past fall, i guess I'm just more shocked I get better mpg's pulling more combined weight than the machine

I had a Ram with the Ecodiesel and didn’t really notice it on my 77x12. I can tell it’s back there with my 2010 Silverado but it’s not bad at all.

Sounds like you have more of a mpg concern than a performance one. You will get bett mpg towing a 5klb load that sits low then you will a 2klb load that tall because the wind drag isn't there.

I have a lift gate on mine and while I have no issues pulling But I have often wondered if I should remove the lift gate. It is also heavy as well as a wind catcher

That ramp...even a mesh one, really has a lot of drag. My old quad one wold fold flat on the trailer, but the one i had to buy for the pioneer (Single axle 5.5x10) won't. Honestly, even without the Pioneer, i could really tell it was there....but i was using an old Jeep Cherokee 4.0. Now I got a proper tow vehicle (5.3 Tahoe), and it doesn't care much.

Anything long distance, I'd remove any windshields or back panels. Pioneers are tall and usually stick up above the roofline of the tow vehicle. It's like towing a really aerodynamic brick wall.

Wind drag. I had a 8' hard side truck camper and a 16' enclosed trailer for the pioneer. I'd get 9-10 with both on my megacab 5.7 hemi and lucky to get 8 with just the trailer loaded or not. And p.s. unless your paralyzed you can feel any trailer on any truck. Especially at the speeds we go. Pull at 55 like the old days and it will be alot easier. I run a 17 Cummins now. Is it better yes, but not for short distances.

I just towed the 1000 with our tuned EBoost explorer 75mph no traffic and 9mpg but it’s 450hp/450ftlbs

It’s same mileage as my 1500 crew at same speed.

It’s a drag chute with the roof and windshield.

Am I the only one that doesn't pay attention to mpg ? I fill it and when I get to a 1/4 I fill it again. I understand that I bought a truck and it's about as aerodynamic as a building. Not try to give anyone a case of the red asz but it's a truck and it's not going to get 15 mpg towing

Hard not to when you’re stopping every 180miles

I don't even bother, I'm not a rich man by any means, but if I'm towing the pioneer I'm more worried about how long its going to take to get there so I can ride than I am about mpg. My 1500 silverado (5.3l) doesn't enjoy towing it, but I slide the seat forward some so I can push the pedal a little further and have found that helps.

I like towing it with the 3.7 EB better than the 5.3. Easier to pass, pulls like a freight train relative to the 5.3, way more comfy, same fuel mileage. Have to be a little more conscientious of how the trailer is balanced than with the 1500 crew but for pulling the Pioneer I have a new favorite.

I used to, but i stopped. Partly because its depressing, partly because it seems to get better mileage when I ignore it and just drive.

I get about 13-14mpg on the highway with the 1000 and some camping gear on the flatbed, no trailer. And about 10-11mpg with the pioneer and a travel trailer. At some point you are ramming such a big hole in the air you just have to pay up at the pump.337dc708107f2822222586053f748913
