When I brake hard I get a sound coming from the machine that sounds like gears grinding. Haven’t been able to pin point the location yet but it sounds really bad. It only happens when braking hard. It does in in Manuel and automatic. It’s a 17 with 700 miles and is new to me. Any ideas what it’s from and possibly how to fix it?

Its probably the normal rear brake noise. 700 owners are familiar with it since it has virtually the same rear end. It's never seemed as bad on the 500 too me, but it's smaller, lighter, and low geared, so you don't have to use them as hard.

Could also be pads gone or a stone lodged in the caliper.

My ‘17 has 2200 miles and sounds like it‘s going to explode under heavy braking. I’m used to it now.

Haven't found it necessary on this machine either, braking at all for that matter. The low gearing works as the brake in most situations, you still get some rear end clatter but not terrible. I've been questioned whether my brake lights were working because they're rarely seen.
