One could get fancy with this, add a button on the door frame to trigger a timer that would turn the courtesy light on for X seconds using an adjustable timer. As to panel lighting, or it could simply turn off with door closure as is done with cars. A couple of diodes can provide the trigger from high and low beam, while keeping those isolated from each other, to turn on instrument lighting - it that's more convenient that using the taillight as previously discussed.
