Went to the dealer, test drove a 2019 Honda P1000-5 and the Honda Pioneer 700-4. Both machines were great but I want the 1000 for the power. The major draw back was how rough it drove compared to the 700. I'm mainly talking about shifting gears... I heard they (1000) break in and get smoother, but is it comparable to the 700??

Keep in mind, had my wife with me and she's convinced that we should get the 700, she was not comfortable with how rough the 1000 drove... I still want the 1000 but I also found it abit rough, specially since I plan on taking the family out once in a while. I also plan on doing abit of everything with this machine incase you were wondering (hunting, trail riding, work...)

I'm new here, this is a great forum with several knowledgeable members, thanks for any information.

Ours has 1,400 miles and is much smoother. Using high range in auto, you can't even feel it shift around the house. The shifting smooths out after the first oil change and the throttle is very sensitive and may have caused part of your test drive jerkiness. You'll get used to it or a lot of guys on here install a throttlemax.

It will shift harder in sport mode. I know a lot of us use manual mode in low range, especially trail riding.

It will smooth out a lot use high gear and easy on the throttle when cruising around on flat ground. You will hardly notice it shift. But it won’t be as smooth as the 700. It is only a 3 speed. Shifts less and doesn’t have a clutch. Had torque converter like a car.

We were the opposite when we test drove. Drove the 700 first and loved it and asked to drive the 1000. Salesman said if I wanted the 700 not to drive the 1000. The extra shifting was the only drawback to us. The power, ride and room was night and day better in the 1000 and that’s what we bought. Love it and have no regrets.

1000 ride will be much smoother, high is fine if you’re putting around and the shifts and clutch engagement smooth out significantly when it gets to operating temp. My wife hates the clutch engagement until it gets to operating temp then it smooths out. The shifting smooths out a lot after the first oil change.

It’s going to clunk some when it shifts but I wouldn’t switch to the 700.

After you put the first 100 miles on the 1000 you'll love it. No comparison.

@Pellicer96

He had 700 and sold it. Now has a 1000. Night and day difference. 700 is great rig but for me and my family the 1000 was much better choice

Had the 700 for almost 250hrs and loved it was great did everything I needed but was very emasculated by lack of torque and power

Bought my 1000 few months ago and it’s a serious night and day difference I would never go back to a 700 afterwards

Below are pics of mine the day I bought and a curent

One thing I've noticed with the 1000 vs the 700 was the noise in the cabin. The extra gearing of the 1000 allows it run at a lower rpm thus making it alot quieter in the cab. We're not speed demons by any means but it always seemed the comfortable speed at which we were riding the 700 was where it was revved pretty high. We only had a few complaints with the 700 but none with the 1000.

I bought a 700 just before 1000 was out.
I 700 did not have enough power and with no low range just did not get around in the mountains as I needed for hunting. 1000 is more roomier than 700.

I started with the 700-4 but had to spend extra money trading up. The 700 is only good for two people on the trails. Simply didn’t have enough power to get up the mountains at Taylor Park. It doesn’t have the low range needed or the gears. The 1000 has both high and low range and 6 gears instea,d of only 3. The 700 just couldn’t make it when we tried to take friends with us. Just our experience. If you’re only on flat easy trails might be ok.

You'll wish youd got a 1000 once you get it out on the trail. The 1000 doesn't ride like a Cadillac but it's a lot better than the 700.

P1K will smooth out alot once some miles get on it.

It's unreal how many people say it's not worth getting the 700-4 over the 1000-5.... It's almost $6000 more for a brand new 1000-5 over the 700-4, but I'll bite the bullet...

It's all in what your using it for honestly, I know several people with both and for that they use them for it works.

My buddy with the 700 uses it to run around his MX track, up and down the road, and occasionally he'll take it on a trail ride.

In contrast his dad has a 1000 and only trail rides, it's a much better machince for his use. Both have their pluses and minuses and I'd take either over any other brand any day. But your paying more for more.
