I want to put together a winch buyers guide for the Honda Pioneer models. To do this I need some real world input that specs on paper will not give. Some winches cost $700+ while others cost $200 and pack just as much punch. Then there is the $100 disposable models, anyone had luck with them?

Some things I would like to know.
  • What Pioneer do you have? 500, 700 or 1000
  • What winch would you suggest and why?
  • and what which is the best value out there for your Pioneer?
Leave comments below.
Thanks.

Me, I have had luck with the terra 45's. This is my 3rd purchase. Had one on the Rincon, Pioneer 700, and now the Pioneer 1000.

I own a Pioneer 1000-5
Recommend the Terra 45 winch, Recommend the rope version the terra 45sr but pricing on the cable usually comes in best and you can upgrade to rope later.
During the holidays past 2 years you can pick up a Terra45 for right at $200.

I’m right there with you and second everything you said! I researched the s*** out of them before I bought. The Terra series was the best bang for the buck and a better line of winch than others. Honda PK5 with the terra 45. I bought from amazon on sale and upgraded to the rope and aluminum hawse. That was the best bang for the buck!

Pioneer 1000.
Warn 4500 ProVantage is my choice on both ends. Not sure how others do overall and I know there are good ones out there but the rear winch is on its 5th rig in 5 years. Both will keep going with me. Only hiccup is broken cable.

I had a warn 4000lb on my 1000-3 with synthetic rope. Synthetic is the only way to go. Warn has never let me down In 20 years but this terra 45 sounds interesting.

I have the Quadboss 5000 lb. winch on my 1000. Was right around 200 bucks..came with wireless remote, corded remote, synthetic winch line, and aluminum fairlead. Little over 2 years use and no issues.

I had good luck with Superwinch terra's on past machines, but I had a catastrophic failure on my 1000 with a terra 45. Talked to superwinch and they wanted me to mail them the entire winch so they could inspect it and see if they would warranty it (broke after only a few uses). However shipping was $50 for me to send it to them... to not even know if they would replace it. So im done with superwinch after that.

I have a warn pro-vantage now that has been fine.

If i was to do it over again, i would go with a Badlands 5000lb winch and the extended warranty.

I've had a warn Vantage 4000s on my 700 for a few years and no issues. To be fair I don't use it very much but it always works when I do. I think it cost in the neighborhood of $400 with synthetic rope. Next go around I'll look hard at the terra 45, not because I'm dissatisfied with the warn but because of the price and decent reputation. Although @Dragon21 has me rethinking the decent reputation part. Nothing worse then a company trying to wiggle out of a warranty claim which is what that sounds like

The price on Warn sucks but someone with a little bit of knowledge can get a provantage 4500 core for under 200. Add a contactor switch for 20 rope for 20 and wireless controller for 15 and a set of used jumper cables (much better insulated and thicker guage then stock winch wire) and your $250 ish and wireless. Saving money can be done without sacrificing.

I have had good luck with my Superwinch Terra 45 with Synthetic rope. I have used it a lot to winch myself and others. I have been impressed at what this winch will do. I got it on sale right after getting the Honda.
I do think the new Warn Axon looks interesting - pricey but it is nice to see innovation in the market

As useful as a winch has been I am surprised to see machines out there that don't have one

I’ll be the first to say it....I’m a cheap bastard and have HF badlands winches on both my car hauler (12k) and a 5K on my P1K-5.

The 5K was given to me (free!) and the one on my car trailer has never let me down in 3 years despite being permanently stored on the trailer in the elements.

I believe the 5K winch can be bought for $150 on sale. I’m okay with it as a winch in my area is more of a nice to have and I can count on one hand how many times I used the one on my polaris Ranger in 10 years. There just aren’t many available winching locations when you’re stuck in a farm field or pasture in Eastern SD. Earth anchors don’t work well either.

Sometimes you can get lucky and reach a wood fence post by using both the tow rope and the entire spool of winch line.

Tow rope and neighbors tractor are usually used in lieu of a winch.

After my superwinch died this is what I did.

Pioneer 500, inexpensive Badlands 3500, added $15 wireless remote and snatch block. Like the easy spool lock knob, toggle switch and separate plug for wired remote handle, installed wired plug in radiator grill, but use the wireless and ROPS mounted toggle switch the most. Pulled 500 and many trees, no snatch block use or problem yet. When needed, will replace wire with synthetic line based on others comments. That said, had an old WARN 8000lb on FJ40 LandCruiser, and that WARN was awesome.

Did not go higher pull rating as the SxS winch mounting, or a-arm is the weakest link if against a solid obstacle. Whichever you get, If a winch stalls out on max pull, re-evaluate strategy or consider that the pull rating depends on # of layers on the spool.

I ended up buying the Warn 4000 for my 1000-3 last year. I haven't had to use it yet but it's there if needed. I was wondering if the warn 4000 has plenty of power for the 1000 ? I carry a snatch block so I can double the pull strength if needed also. I really need to test mine to see what it will do. I used to test my atv winches by seeing if the winch would hang the atv by a tree limb. lol
