So I've been reading about winch mounting options and it doesn't seem like I've read about a setup that seems "right". I read about the extreme cable angle, mounting upside down, etc. I am wanting to get a winch installed but I can't seem to decide on a good mount. And I'm a bit OCD and I really do not want the winch mounted with the freewheel knob on the passenger side. Any help?

I installed the viper elite and I’m pretty happy with it so far. My free spool knob is on the drivers side.

So why did he mount his upside down?
I’m losing my mind, I thought it was on the drivers side but it’s not, I had thought about flipping it and didn’t lol. Sorry for the misinformation.

Haha!! So it can be flipped around?
I’m not sure enough to say, i think it could be done but you’d have to drill new holes to mount the winch in that position.

I have a Warn VRX 45S. Warn makes a mount for the 2020 Pioneer 1000-5 but not for the Axon .

Mine is mounted with the freespool knob on the passenger side.

Warn technical support thru email and phone support said there is no danger if damaging the mounting bolts in this configuration, nor any problem with the cable winding in over the top of the drum vs under the drum.

This seemed contrary to what I was use to with large truck winches.

But, I've seen no problems so far. If I had a choice I'd prefer the knob on the driver's side as my left hand is stroke affected and it'd be physically easier.

Here's what Warn recommended for the 2020 Pioneer 1000-5:

Good luck on your search

Thanks for the reply.

Does anyone know how the Honda OEM mount works? It just seems like a bad design having to flip the winch around and spool off the top to get it to work. Maybe I am overthinking it (which I tend to do on everything)?

I have not used the factory Honda mount. I have used the Warn mount at it fits well and makes the winch fairly easy to reach despite being upside down.

By comparison I previously had the KFI mount and I struggled to keep the bolts tight after hard winch pulls and the cable angle is poor. The winch was tough to free spool.

I currently have the Warn winch bumper and this makes winching easy and the mounts are nice and line up well with the frame

My last front bumper was an RD front bumper and the fit to the stock mounts was poor, the upper mounts were flimsy and the bumper wasn't a great fit to the machine. I smashed the front skid plate on it the first time out and tweaked the mounting brackets. I ended up making my own mounts and modifying the bumper a lot to make it less flimsy. In the end it was much improved but not worth the cost

I have an EMP mount that’s still in the box, never opened, I’d let go for cheap. I decided to go with a Toug Country bumper. I like the winch being easy to get to.

edit: it’s an EMP mount, not a KMI

I wanted total access to my winch so I built my own. I like to be able to see the rope winding and be up out of the mud. Also put a fairlead on the bottom so I can run rope straight down from drum to my snow plow this makes the rope last much longer.

Just an update.

NOW Warn states this mount

Will accept the VRX 45S and the Axon 45 on the 2020 Pioneer.

Not sure what changed, as before they said only the VRX world fit.

Note:***If you have the LE with the big OEM brush guard, the mount/bumper wont fit

Its a Warm winch bumper. #101700. I bought. mine at Montana Jacks along with a Warn Axon 45S. Super people to deal with. They even tossed in a fairlead bracket.

I've done business with Montana Jack's since 2003. Had their multi mount for Warn winch. USA made great welds.

I'm seriously thinking of going to that work the Axon winch exposed.

With my left hand after a stroke this would allow me to reach the freespool handle my Zeon winch.

Gotta see it the mount is available to got my OEM big brush guard LE model or if this one can be notched.

Looks like mount is made by Warn and sold thru Montana Jacks. Note the little W cut into the top left
