This thread is from the 700 section. The Pioneer 500 uses the same brake pads as the 700, and Big Red pads are a different part number, but they will work in the 500 or 700. I wish I had seen it before buying brake pads for the 500. Hopefully posting a link here will help prevent others from overpaying for brake pads.

P700 - Front Brake Pads - Pioneer $157 vs Big Red $76???

So why is Honda doing this to us. And thanks ehart for this heads up, much appreciated. It's kind of like getting parts for my old Z-71, if I know that it doesn't matter, I'll just say Chevy 1500 because often parts that are unrelated to the 4 wheel drive aspect of the truck are marked up because it's a Z-71!

Who knows.... I'm not too upset because I am very happy with how the original brakes performed, so I know I can expect the same life and performance. And, I wanted them as soon as possible, and Rocky Mountain had the factory P500 pads in stock so I ordered them right away without doing research. They will be in my porch when I get home (standard shipping is 1 day for me from RM!!!) Maybe next time I'll try the Big Red pads or the cheapies.

I personally don't consider 1,200 miles to be good service. I'm at 2,000 and still have half life. My Polaris ranger has 5,000 miles, is 7 years old and still has the original linings.

The 700 and 500 supposedly use a backing plate that the big red doesn't.

1,200 miles is perfectly acceptable, because of the conditions. If my P5 never got muddy, I'd be screaming right now. Mud destroys brake pads in a hurry. And I had never even inspected the front brakes until now, let alone clean the mud out that had been building up around the pads.

I'm going out on a limb here....but I'm going to assume that you ride in relatively dry conditions.

Yep, you better scurry back to the trunk, lol. We get 50" of rain a year where I primarily ride. :)

Foot-in-mouth! haha

If you are riding through deep mud regularly, then you are certainly getting excellent life out of your brake pads.

I'm meticulous about washing my machine after any rides that include mud, mud puddles and creek crossings which is most often.

Does that mean that they couldn't be used on the P5 then, or can the backing plate be removed??

Personally, I wouldn't even worry about it.
If that is a concern, you should be able to re-use the plate from your old pads. I believe the purpose of that shim is to dampen vibration for quieter operation.

That plate behind the pad is called an "anti-squeal" or "anti-rattle" pad. They are also common on automotive disc brake pads. They can be reused but require new adhesive so they "stick" to the piston. The adhesive can be bought at any parts store and is sold in small squeeze packages for minimal charge. Usually the counterman will try to sell it as an add-on if it is not included in the box with the pads.
