One more question "do you" question.

How necessary is a winch?

I have never had a winch on anything before. I have been stuck a few times that I could have used a winch and I have been winched out by friends when riding but I have never had a winch on my Rincon.

Other than a couple of times that I went into what I thought was solid ground and got stuck in mud, I have always been able to rock it out (like last time I got stuck in a snow bank).

I know there is no way that I could rock a 1,700 lb machine enough to do anything. But I have also never really ridden a SXS on anything other than woods trails.

Do you have a winch and have you used it?

I would definitely recommend a winch. I have had mine stuck twice. First time I was pulled out by a truck because a four wheeler or tractor wouldn't do it. Second time it took a Polaris ranger and a can-am outlander. A couple of broke straps and a couple of hours later it was out. I will have a winch on mine before I ride again

Good Question. In what I read in your posts you don't need a winch. I will say you will not rock a sxs out. I have a winch and have used it 3 times. Those 3 times I did use it were a month after I bought the machine and the weekend I put it on and went out and buried it 3 times intentionally in one day and the winch performed great. I learned the limits of the machine and never have intention of ever using a winch again other than on a snow blade.

If you don't ride with other people you are walking with out a winch. And sometime if they don't have a winch you might be riding and leaving your SxS where it is. Intel you can get it out. Sometimes I have to remove a tree out of the way with my winch. The winch can help clear trial I have my own trials and I ride a lot with just my wife so it's nice to have a winch.

I had one installed on mine, haven't used it yet. It's worth the price even if I only need it one time. Kinda like having a gun, better to have and not need than need and not have.

That is a really good point. Thank you for putting it in those terms.;)

I installed a winch one week after buying the SxS. I've had other machines and used it occasionally. It's just "piece of mind" to have it and not need it.

I can't fathom going without a winch.
Maybe my riding is more extreme than I thought but I will not go without a winch and I seldom venture out alone. We prefer to have two vehicles. A 3-6 mile hike out, in the mud is not for me.

If you are having trouble with the money, you might have to ride without a winch. I promise that winch will become worth the money after you spend hours hiking to get help.

I've only used my winch one or two times to get my self unstuck but I've used it countless times working around my house and ranch. Moving down trees, raising and lowering my camper shell, stretching fence, and even lifting a pig feeder out of the mud. To me it's like a smartphone, I never thought I needed one until I had one!

Like what most of the other post the question is what will you use your machine for. Yeah - all go in the mud & I have as well & yet to need the winch but working the property (hunting) it has earned it's keep for me. Clearing roads/paths of tree dead falls & setting up tower blinds it has been right on. Not a every trip use but oh so good when you need it...............................

My kids and winch go with me every time, lol. Can't imagine going riding without them.

Regarding the extraction equipment, yes I have one of those too. Not that I intend to get stuck, but it is there if I need it. There have also been some trails in Arkansas that had I been alone I would have broken out the winch instead of trying to make it up. But I had spotters and they were moving rocks and such to help me get up a couple places.

If money's the issue you could always carry a 2" ratchet strap with you...it would probably draw you out in one or two cycles. That's all I gave my son for his atv.
