I’m installing a ham radio antenna (Comet SS-608SBNMO) on my 22 P1000/5 cage with an Axia mount.

I know it need a ground plain so wonder what would be the best way. Can I run a heavy wire (#8?) from the mount to the frame or do I need to sand through the paint on the mount and frame?

Thanks!

i use that same mount with my setup with a no ground plane antenna and one with my pioneer with a normal antenna, no issues. i can still get 15+ miles simplex. don't think you'll need a grounding strap.
check your swr's and move mount to get the best results. i had to lower mine about 2" for the best swr's with my antenna.

best all around dualband antenna i've ever used was this one.
if you type this into amazon it'll come up.

it doesn't get you the range like a 1/2 or 5/8 wave will. but for using dualband at the same time. it's been perfect!. the the one currently on my pioneer.

in the center of the roof when i'm not carring a bag there, else i use the mount you posted on the passanger rear pillar with my previous antenna mentioned.

Thanks everyone for yout input.

i figured it best to go with a ‘no ground plane’ antenna so I wouldn’t have to worry about it. I also need a shorter one with a spring so I went with a Browning BR-136 Tri-Band Antenna 22”. I’ll let you know how it works…

I use a dual band 2m/70cm mag mount antenna, mounted on a L shaped metal bracket bolted to the roof. I've had this setup for 6 years, and it works good.

I appreciate all the information i recieved here so I wanted to post my completed project. I installed a TYT TH-8600 with a Browning BR-136 NGP antenna.
I was able use the standard radio mount by reversing it and enlarging one of the mounting holes to attach to one of the mounts for my SuperATV windshield mounts,20221202 132101
