Heading towards being like Britain, you have to pay almost as much to have a TV "license" there as you do for the TV.

If mobile base station radios can be used on those freqs and at greater outputs, why can the handhelds not? Transceiver is a Transceiver....
They are probably next. Basically a radio is only suppose to transmit on a specified set of frequencies. Example a radio advertised as a Ham Radio only has the ability to transmit on Amature Radio bands. FRS/ GMRS radio’s= only broadcast on those frequencies. The China radios (which are knock offs and pretty much stolen tech) do not restrict the frequencies. Radio’s , cell phones, Routers, everything that broadcast on a freq is supposed to be certified for those Frequencies they broadcast on & meet the requirements of the that band. Boefang does not do that and because of that they have been stealing business (my guess) and are getting hand slapped for it.

While it is probably not bothering anyone deep in the woods ... bring that to a suburban area and your going to have issues that pop up... my guess is that the handhelds are the best selling items so they are starting there.

I will say Boefang really gets or should get credit for bringing a low cost radio into the market. Their little handheld when first introduced turned the Amature Radio manufactures upside down and really caused them to up their game - forcing them to develop a next level of radios

Yeah but they're transmitting on the freq available to transmit on...just not for a handheld to transmit on...and at the LOW unusable power levels that the FRS/GMRS rations transmit on. Those things are pretty much useless. You can't even use them 1/2mile apart in an open field.

If they are stealing business the other manufactures need to keep up, its called capitalism, improve....copy ideas if you have to but improve them and set yourself apart from the competition.

AT&T where we are at will not upgrade the infrastructure to provide more than about 3mb download, and they charge $80 to get it.
I am using tech from work and setting up a 40' utility pole to wirelessly transmit 2gbs to it and share it with 4 of the neighbors. It will cost us <$1000 for the material and we will be paying $120mo each for the 2gb/s connection. Were getting rid of DirecTV SAT and going with their DIrecTVNOW for $120 less a month so its a win win.

I might go ahead and upgrade to the 50w mobile while I can still get it, keep the 25w and wait till the market is right for them and make my money back for the 50w.

O I agree on the FRS radio they are no better than a set of kid walkie talkie but they are set up for with the law allows . The 1.5w transmit etc.. basically useless. Most of the laws governing use of our airwaves are bad and the government sold many rights to the telecom companies for pennies. I was just saying what I think they are doing and why I think they are doing it.
The one law I do agree with is the spurious transmissions one.. junk/ cheap transmitters will often put out harmonic transmissions that can interfear with other things... example of how cheap lights can give feedback in a stereo.. there is suppose to be testing on all things to help cut that down...

Yes there needs to be standards, but the airwaves are the airwaves. Technically you could buy all the parts to make a radio if you had the skills to assemble it. None of those are regulated, but put them together and transmit and your technically illegal unless you pay for the privilege. Not a fan of that make something better and make people want to buy your stuff not lobby for legislation to make someone buy your stuff.

Sounds like the CB linear amps beyond 5 watts, sold at every CB shop around truck stops.

O there is a mod out on the internet for every Ham radio where you unsolder a jumper and it removed that restriction. So even if the Baofengs have to go to that they mods will appear.

Yep, I knew a lot CB people running big wattage when I was younger.

When I used to teach a Ham class for getting your license I would say the HT (handheld) is the first radio you will get and the radio you will end up using the least.... while they have their place and use they are compromised too much.

I still carry my HT on the trail to use as a back up and then it come in handy to have when out of the vehicle (used when winching for clearer communication)

On their site this morning this is listed under the UV 5RV2+
Upload 2018 8 3 8 39 36

Now under a little more powerful 8W model that looks the same it has the same warning but list its Frequency range as bigger
Upload 2018 8 3 8 42 6

So it appears by this modification they are not too worried about the FRS frequencies but more worried about the Aviation and satellite communication - all of which makes perfect sense.

BF-F8HP SPECIFICATIONS, also like the ability to listen to FM radio using CALL button. As Ragnar said, will carry as back up or if away from mobile unit in sxs. Handhelds still have their benefits.

Frequency range:

[TX] 136 - 174MHz, 400 - 520MHz

[RX] 136 - 174MHz, 400 - 520MHz, 68-108MHz (FM Broadcast)

@jtucker , Option of NMO hole mounts and antenna without magnet base. Or just screw metal plate on top. Any concerns with being hit by branches where you ride? Also have L brackets for these NMO mounts. Examples of what I got for my TYT8600 and Baofeng handheld, just find proper type antenna connector or adapter to fit what you have. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BLCLUJ6/?tag=sxsweb24-20
